A customer / client of mine has been with a company whose initial business was connecting America to the internet. He was been with this ISP for the last 12 years without a problem and was happy. Personally, I'm fairly sure this must be a record for this ISP!

Anyway, in the last 48 hours he's spend 6 of them on the phone to this company and is now seriously considering changing ISP's. I've not really got any experience of moving someone from this company broadband service and was wondering if anyone here has and / or your experiences of your broadband suppliers.

He's not a heavy user, so a 512K / 1Mb would do the job, but customer service is important has he is a complete IT Numpty. Plus he receives most of his advice "from a friends, who’s' good with computers" - we all know what that means!!!

I can second Pipex or suggest UKOnline as they have a good cost effective deal right now for all their broadband products.

Agreed the UKonline deal does seem good... I've just signed up with them. Email me through my profile if you decide to go this route... enter me as a referrer and we both get a month free!

Metronet are good. Especially if you have low usage months.
1Mb starts at about £11 and goes up to £24 depending how much you use.

www.metronet.co.uk

You can also get through to a good customer service helpdesk if needed.

Just whatever you do, do not go with NTL.

They redefine incompetence and take it to a whole new level.

LOL I'm with NTL and have never really had a problem. But having said that I don't rely on them for any kind of help.

But would not suggest them to a non technical person.

I'm with metronet, very good, their technical support is excellent.

Resonable too, but the guy will need his own modem, filters etc, setup isn't complicated.

I'd also recommend Pipex or Nildram (which is now part of Pipex!) but you can sign up as a Pipex or Nildram customer...

I used to have so many problems with Pipex. Plus their customer service is terrible. It's not uncommon to be on hold for more than 20 minutes.

Plusnet is the one to go for. £21.99 is a good price plus you get a lot for it too including:

- Static IP address (brilliant for your own server, remote desktop, etc...)

- 250MB Webspace including domain parking!

- MySQL databases, PHP, FrontPage extensions, CGI and loads more.

- Customer service is brilliant. Usually calls are answered in 3 minutes or less. Plus it's 24/7 so you can call any time and the problems are usually resolved there and then.

- Oh, and the service is uber reliable. Never ever gone down on me once and I always get a fast, solid connection (2MB).

This is what we're on. Tech Support is good - they even managed to explain things to my Dad when we had problems!
