I've owned an '07 CTR for about 7 months and had to replace the front calipers, discs, pads, now shock absorbers and tyres, the joys of owning a decade old car, eh? Even though I probably won't sell until some time after summer at least (might do a few track days), it's made me look at ideas for the next one.

I think I could get £5k for mine, plus a bit to spend, say £8k budget.

Always had a soft spot for 8P S3s, they seem to have held their value well (were £10k for quite a while), but looking at the (overinflated) AutoTrader prices, seems like you could get a semi-decent one for around £8-9k with a bit of haggling. My only issues are; I'd be spending a few more grand and only come out with a year or two older car - just doesn't sit right with me, and coming from the Type R I feel it'd be quite lacking in involvement/seem dull.

Alternatively, the Megane RS250's are similar money, at least a few years newer than the R and being an RS, probably more fun than the Audi. What are they like to drive?

Can't speak for the Mégane but if you enjoy driving, don't buy the Audi... I did, it went after a year. Quick off the lights but that gets old pretty quick.

The S3 will the the better daily driver ans suited as an all-rounder. The Meg is the one you want to go for a spirited drive in and maybe some track days too.

It's all dependent on what you want from a car.

I had a 250 when they were first released on a cheap PCP deal, was mega on track especially in the wet and even in the basic cup spec comes with A/C and cruise. Quick too and felt well built, although was brand new and I've not been in once since I got rid of mine in 2011 (for an S2 Exige).
