Manual DB9 Variable groaning noise

Hi,

I have posted on here before about a low level variable groan that i get, appears to be from the front and starts to become audible at about 35mph, gets very loud around 40 and then stays constant over road noise up to 75 When it gets louder again

I have had 4 new Michilin tyres and new front discs and pads and it is just the same.

It has been suggested it could be wheel bearing bit it gets no louder when you corner either way and there is no play in the wheels or noticeable bearing noise when you spin the wheels

The rear discs and pads and been stripped and cleaned and it's hard to spin the rear wheels with the diff drag.

Any ideas very welcome!

So the lack of replied suggests this isnt a normal noise

For anyone that's had a where bearing go, what were the symptoms? How many miles did it take to fail? What made you first think that was anything wrong?

You have probably flummoxed the contributors with your question.

As you say, the noise does not change when cornering, therefore eliminating wheel bearings. The test for that of course is weaving, which loads the wheel bearings on each side alternately, and it would be expected that the noise of a worn wheel bearing would vary with each turn.

When you are going down hill, does the noise still continue, or change intensity, if you move the gear lever to neutral? If your gearbox is an auto, I presume that this can be done on a DB9. It can on my Mercedes auto, but I am now wondering if perhaps electronics might block that on some cars.

No more ideas I am afraid.

Hi,

The noise doesnt vary under load either up down hill.

It's a manual so I can dip the clutch, even the engine select different gears etc and it doesn't chnage the noise, only Godspeed

The new tyres are wearing evenly as the last ones did, I am going to get a 4 wheel alignment done just to eliminate this though

I even took the engine lower cover off just to make sure it wasn't an air flow thong under the car

Have you jacked the car up and spun the wheels by hand to listen for the noise or feel for a rumble? Worn bearings don't always change pitch or tone when cornering.

Yeah i have spun and wobbled the front wheels but I can't spin rherear wheels because of the drag on the diff

Hi...my son installed new michenlin tires on his Mustang after taking to Rich who owns Redpants in Florida.

The lastest tires hold better...as he was spinning wheels in first ...second ...sometimes third...but when I drove the car I opened the windows as I thought something was wrong. While most tires make some road noise the new ones he put on are louder like you stated above 25-35 mph...not crazy loud but due to the sticky compounds used...more noise than cheaper harder tires.

If car drives ok and no shakes etc...maybe the answer is tire road noise...

Maybe a diff bearing? Prop shaft bearing?

I once had similar of an Alfa GT, horrendous noise, speed related, didn't vary whilst turning or swerving. I changed tyres and discs/pads chasing the bloody nose, that turned out to be a front wheel bearing. I changed both and the noise was solved.

If pads and discs are ok why not just replace the wheel bearings and rule that in or out. Not a terribly expensive job and worst case you rule that out as a cause (and it is the most likely) and you get a set of new bearings.

Hi yes! It was a eear wheel bearing, not bad enough to hear when spun but that cured it
