OK so this is a spin of the wheel in the lounge on a Friday night..

Father in Law coming to town (well his flight touched down today). I'm off to his son's stag do tomorrow ahead of the wedding this year (I'm marrying his daughter later this year). He's the CEO and MD of a large multinational oil company. I'm not. Can anyone offer any insightful conversational topics that don't make me look like the bumbling mid-level web dev I am?

There was an excellent post linking an article about Trump misunderstanding the DoE that would be excellent, but I've already used that.

Who gives a fk?

Honestly if you're planning to do right for his daughter that's all that matters?

You'll end up making a fool of yourself using things you've read online in an effort to impress.

EDIT: DO NOT fk A STRIPPER ON HIS SON'S STAG DO.

Just chill out and talk like you would to your mates or work colleagues. Football, news, whatever.. Just avoid any lewd stuff about the 3 some you had in college.

Yeah pretty good advice all round. I'd still like to chip into any conversation, not trying to pass myself off as some business savant.

Had a similar thing with my first missus.

Her old man was the boss of JJ Sports/Soccer World (?) at the time, he took me and her older brother out for a few beers for his 21st one evening.

I’d recommend a tiny bit of ego polishing to start in the sober stages, then as suggested above treat him like one of the lads, he’ll thank you for both, both the respect for his business achievements and the respect for him having a night off from all of it, future MIL included.

Thanks, sorry I should be more clear, I've already met the man on more than one occasion, asked him face to face for permission to marry his daughter and I'm not (especially) in awe of him (he said yes, so he can be tricked). Aalthough he's on a level I'll never even begin to be (one on one with the president of China meeting type stuff), I'm just hoping to find some interesting st to say as I've had a couple of ales and I've got that 'interview looming tomorrow' feeling. Any cool/interesting/engineering stuff that PH has come across would be clutched like a thirsty man sensing a straw!

And I don't want be ungrateful to everyone who's replied so far, cheers!

Wait, I just got it... Sorry lads, I'm a bit thick. He's and engineer, I like cars, we'll talk about cars instead of me pretending. Can't see the trees...

I work for an American oil business, so have half an idea what he’ll like...

Do discuss - Cars, sport, maybe movies, the royal wedding.

Don’t discuss - Trump (he probably voted for him), gun laws (he probably has an armoury), religion (unless you are devout).

Honestly you’ll be fine - he’s probably a perfectly good pragmatic guy, and will know just how you’re feeling.

Sorry, yeah all of that, he's british so no go on trump or the rest. He's religious in so far as he's a mason (cue the conspiracy).

Ever thought he might actually be a reasonable bloke who might even like you as a person?

If that doesn't work, I suggest you get the conversation round to sex. Dads love to talk about their daughters sex life.

One of the smaller outfits like Tullow or Premier?

Anyhow you can always discuss the political situation & how all the oil companies are selling up assets there!
