Hello all

So I've been struggling to consistently connect Spotify app to my idrive. I can almost always see it, yet only sometimes can I connect and make it work.

Research around the Web reveals its a common android problem.

I've been undertaking a trial and error process of elimination, making sure phone unlocks, both connected app and Spotify app on in background and no settings on the phone turning it off.

What seems to work is putting the phone in the wireless charging bracket. Once connected with phone on bracket, it stays connected when phone comes out of bracket.

Hope this helps anyone with the same problem.

Anyone else got any insight?

(I'm using a Samsung s8 to a 66 plate 6 series)

Cheers
Bop

I was under the impression that only the very latest version of idrive (in the G series cars) only work with android

Maybe. The frustrating thing is it works just often enough for me to persevere with it...

Interesting.

I'm about to order a 118i M Sport and was curious if Bluetooth audio streaming was standard and what's needed to use Spotify on my phone.

Is the connected app that bad? It'll be a new car, I'm not sure why they don't have Android auto tbh.

In my VW Spotify works...but the screen on the car displays the previous track, not the current one. Using another player (not Spotify) doesn't have this problem, neither does using the USB cabled 'Connect' method.

Bluetooth audio streaming is standard (and I think the apps are too - think it also works with business nav now but not 100% sure)

Spotify integration works fairly well on my 3 series. Sometimes it bugs out and it is slow to connect initially but works much better than the native bt audio functions. This is with iOS though

Ah OK thanks for the reply. I wasn't sure if I'd need to upgrade the Bluetooth package or not.

I'm popping in to order the car later so I'll ask the dealer what's what.

Just back from the dealer (car ordered.... hurrah!) and I mentioned my concerns about Spotify.

We jumped into a same spec car (although 6 months old) and it worked without any dramas. It was purely as a BT media source so I can't move about the Spotify menus but that'll do me. Salesman seemed to think if it's plugged in via USB it might allow you to do a bit more but I'm happy with what I've seen.

Yeh the BT streaming works a treat.

The app when it works is brilliant. Today I did 4 journeys, and it worked on 2, on one occasion it just connected and started playing in the same way the bt audio does.

Agree that the bt streaming is substantially the same. It's just frustrating because the app works sometimes, and also because iOS integration is so much better with bmw. I think bmw have come out and said that they won't support android auto. I think they have also said they will drop apple carplay and route everything through bmw connected. Which is bonkers as the rest of the world uses car aplay and android auto.

More importantly, congrats on new car!

iOS user here with an F11 (64 plate) - Spotify will connect only when it feels like it. It's not just an Android issue.

That makes me feel a little better, actually. Thanks!

I’ve found that regularly doing an “update services” on the idrive helps as it checks the central servers for a new set of apps (it doesn’t say if it has updated it just re-downloads whatever is there) When I had issues.

Mine is idrive 5 though so might be more reliable than older cars. Often if it doesn’t work a restart of the phone app sorts it. I would say on the whole 85% of the time it works straight off.
