Dick that I am, I got pulled over for speeding the other day.

This was the first time it's happened and it was all rather confusing. He immediately started talking about convictions and I had to sit in the back of the police car while he took my details and stuff. He then showed me my average speed over a period of a couple minutes as opposed to my max speed (which he didn't tell me) and gave me the whole terrible person lecture, and accused me of "abusing the vehicle" etc etc...

I'm just curious what other people's experiences are

I'm planning on just sucking it up and take it on my massive chin and with any luck get a speed awareness course, but we'll see...

If anyone cares: a '16 plate 2.0litre Caddy gets 45mpg sitting at 90

Don't think you'll be doing a speed awareness course at 90 mph! That is 20 over the limit...

Or 40 / 30 over the limit if he was on a single / DC - i think the Caddy is limited to 50 / 60 on single / dual roads isn't it?

During my driving life I’ve picked up a few speeding points. Experience ranges from police being down right rude, friendly, comedy and everything in between. You won’t get speed awareness course- just have to take it I’m afraid.

You have just experienced a typical copper lecturing a young bloke because he can. I used to get it from condescending traffic cops quite regularly when I was young, they tend not to do it with worldly wise older blokes even if they ARE tear arsing about.

If it's a van, yep.

Plenty of vans have a 50/60 NSL limit without being 7.5T

Clarification- the limit was 70.

Figured the speed awareness course would be a bit of a long shot!

Oh well. Suitably chastened.

I think it's roughly this:

Speed awareness maximum 10% +9, so up to 86 in a 70.

FPN (3 points and £100) 87 to 95.

96 and above court.

Assuming you're eligible for an FPN (have fewer than 9 points) etc.

This is one of the reasons I never want a diesel car, I'm happy cruising at 35mpg and I doubt my license would last long at that speed.

I was stopped 32mph over the limit.. coppers were polite and reasonable, did what they had to do and I was on my way.

Summons turned up a few months later.

As long as your V5 says "passenger" or "CDV" (Car Derived Van) you can run at the same limits as a car can.

The new banding for speeding (changed April 2017) is below.

Under Band A, the court can impose a fine in the range of 25-75% of your weekly salary. You will also receive three penalty points.

Band A speeding offences:
21-30mph when the speed limit is 20mph
31-40mph when the speed limit is 30mph
41-55mph when the speed limit is 40mph
51-65mph when the speed limit is 50mph
61-80mph when the speed limit is 60mph
71-90mph when the speed limit is 70mph

Under Band B, the range is 75-125% of your weekly salary, plus between four and six penalty points or disqualification from driving for seven to 28 days

Band B speeding offences:
31-40mph when the speed limit is 20mph
41-50mph when the speed limit is 30mph
56-65mph when the speed limit is 40mph
66-75mph when the speed limit is 50mph
81-90mph when the speed limit is 60mph
91-100mph when the speed limit is 70mph

Under Band C the range is 125-175% of your weekly salary, plus six penalty points or a seven to 56-day driving ban.

However, the guidelines also explicitly state ‘Where an offender is driving grossly in excess of the speed limit the court should consider a disqualification in excess of 56 days’, so that’s not a set limit.

Band C speeding offences:
41mph and above when the speed limit is 20mph
51mph and above when the speed limit is 30mph
66mph and above when the speed limit is 40mph
76mph and above when the speed limit is 50mph
91mph and above when the speed limit is 60mph
101mph and above when the speed limit is 70mph

I thought they had to send stuff like that out within 14 days?

Also I was planning on using my username as part of my defense if necessary...

You are confusing NIP and court summons.

A NIP has to be provided within 14 days (either in writing or verbal at the road side as you received).

Them talking to you and telling you that they are going to report you for the offence is technically your "NIP"

You'll receive a FPN/SAC/Summons now in the post at some point..

Not this nonsense again. That's only relevant if there are court proceedings.

90/70 is a £100 fixed penalty with 3 points.
