Currently looking for an Astra vxr with rougly 80k but very worried about the gear box going. I've seen one that's had a full rebuild. What would I need to look out for with something like this?

Looking away would be best, if you are worried about reliability.

Looks like a cop magnet.

If the mods have been done cheaply, it'll be expensive to fix. That's the risk you take when buying a modded car. OTOH, if he rebuilt the internals with better components in order to handle more power, you might be on a winner. Still, not worth paying extra for.

You’d be safer buying the current sotw.

I'd avoid that if the seller hasn't listed any work done on the gearbox.

New clutch is usually a good sign but he doesn't say anything about it being uprated - and those K06 turbos on Astras are good for 350+bhp...

The gearbox may well be able to take it but at 80k it isn't going to be in tip top shape, I personally wouldn't want to risk putting that level of power through it provided its mapped to 350+

They are cracking value at sub 5k. The issue is, it's one of those cars that will be bought and run by people on a budget. So, while bargains can be had out there, i'd be skeptical at going for something at the cheaper end of the spectrum, especially with some of the common issues that can occur.

Try and find one ran by an enthusiast, with mountains of paperwork and maintained ideally by a specialist.

Yeah think I'll look at trying to find one with a low number of previous owners then with specialist service history and maybe a recent clutch and gearbox change

I wouldn't be put off the car but I'd want to see receipts so I can see exactly what was & wasn't carried out, for example I'd want to see the receipts for the pistons & rods to see what quality one he actually bought.

Also if you see one you like & the gearbox hasn't been done use this as a position to haggle the seller down on price.
