have my eyes on a 1.4 fsi golf from late 2006 that has covered 94k miles and has only had one previous owner which looks like it has taken good care of it. The timing belt has worn which the dealer said will replace, but overall is this worth buying or will it have a lot of issues given the age and mileage? Also would this be cheap to run? Choosing the 1.4 instead of a higher engine because of insurance being a lot cheaper and as a first car.

They didn't do a 1.4FSI iirc. Is it the 1.4 TSI or the 1.6 FSI? If the 1.4TSI avoid like the plague - very unreliable (twincharged units)

The 1.4 FSI was available from 2004-2006 on the Mk5. We had one in the family many years ago. I would avoid if I was you, reasons being:
- Timing chain issues
- Poor fuel economy, the engine is simply underpowered and needs constant revving out to get up to speed
- Not that cheap on insurance as you’d expect
- Intake manifold is a poor design, the flaps can fail which requires a new manifold
- Very poor spec on the base model Mk5, ours didn’t even have an MPG display

The TSI twincharger 140/170 engines were also flawed. For a short period of time the 1.4 TSI 122 turbo was available and that is what I’d be looking to get.
