Can someone please explain to me the difference (in plain english)between a "cat back" exhaust and a straight through? Finally which one is legal and will pass an MOT ?

Hi Brian.

We should talk soon. I have had some more 'work' completed on my car that you may be interested in!!

A complete ss exhaust and headers for starters that is not 'straight through'.But sounds awesome!

The issue as I understand it with exhausts is principally noise and emmissions. Straight through can mean no cats and no rear muffler box - a straight pipe basically or a straight through pipe from the catalytic converter to the end at the back of your car.

I have had both of these descriptions used for 'straight thru'.

Cat Back is simply meaning a new section of exhuast from the catalytic converter to the end which can be straight thru or have a rear silencer.

See Jagsys video on the video links on uk drivers club that should help.

I am sure others will provide a better explanation but this is a start.

Well it is a wider package which the exhaust is a major component of - I am getting the car back tomorrow pm in Salisbury if you are interested and you can see and hear for youself and you can meet the chaps who have sorted this (again!)

A cat-back is generally a new exhaust system that bolts on to the rear of your standard catalytic convertor and is a generic term.

A straight through cat-back is one with no silencers. Effectively, the catalytic converter is the only silencing and it's pretty effective. However, long pipe runs cause droning inside the car so some straight-through exhaust have an expansion chmber which is basically an empty silencer to break up the length of pipe.

Headers are the exhaust manifolds.

A complete straight-through system is one without cats which will rip your eardrums but which won't be legal on noise grounds and on emissions possibly but post-92, a catalytic convertor is compulsory. there are also sensors which will detect the lack of a cat and light up your check engine light. You can buy hi-flow cats that are as good as a straight-through.

The CAT generally sucks a bit of power as it restricts the airflow, however it apparently reduces the emissions. So more power by removing it, but you run the risk of increasing emissions .

The MOT checks emission levels so you probably won't pass without a CAT, however most people know a friendly MOT station who overlook this minor fact.

The MOT tester does not use a dB meter to check for noise although generally a very loud exhaust would again be up to the discretion of the MOT tester, I just had my bike done last week and was unlucky enough to have an MOT inspector overlooking the test and he pointed out some things like the exhaust now does not have to have BSI/Manufacturers stamps but must be no louder than an OEM exhaust, again how do you test for this ?

Remember that you don't need an MOT for 3 years so just change the whole thing and enjoy it, cats are for pussies anyway

Up to about 500 bhp the std cats seem to flow fine and not restrict. Can upset the PCM if cats come off and will require some 'tweaking' to overcome.

As regards noise, have yet to hear a decat'd car that sounds better than cat'd one in mild state of tune.

Friendly MOT testers will be of no use in the near future as the testing stations are to be fully automated without operator input, so even I will have to replace my exhaust system to meet new criteria; however it can be swapped over!

Even when the new electronic mot system is introduced it will still allow friendly stations to pass decatted cars, it's unbelieveably simple.

Plus the other benefit of removing the CAT is better mpg.
