New shed or spend up to 5k?
Discussion
Hi all,
My shed has reached the point of uneconomic repair in my opinion. I've spent £600 on it in the last couple of months; it's only worth £500. So I need to make a choice and was looking for some advice.
Do I get another 500-1k shed and gamble another years worth, once my current shed dies, or do I spend up to 5k and get a decent, but boring, car that could last me a number of years? I'm looking to get a house in a year or two so I dont want to potentially throw money away on something interesting but depreciation heavy.
Reliability needs to be at the top of the list but also something that is comfortable but relatively quick.
Top choice is spending up to my max budget and getting a Lexus IS250 SE-L. 4-5k gets a nice one but on higher mileage ~100k.
Cheaper option is a Mk8 Honda Civic ES 1.8 which would be roughly 3-4k.
Any thoughts on the above choices? They seem to be up there for reliability but ultimately very dull. Anything else worth considering?

That's good to hear! Private sell is going to be where I need to look then.
How did you find the car? What were your main positives/negatives?
It was an excellent car. Really wanted one without leather seats, and found this in Glasgow. Bit (lot) of a trek, but a good car. How did you find the car? What were your main positives/negatives?
Good points:
Really liked what it looked like. The paint was still like new, was amazingly clean. The interior was a nice place to be - loved the dials, electric everything, heated seats, keyless, just felt really well made. Quiet, comfortable, was a nice (if unexciting) steer. Handled well, engine sounded better than most 4-pots.
Bad points:
Liked a drink. Replaced it with a Smart Roadster and saved about a grand in fuel over the next 12 months. Predictable considering one was 700cc and the other 2500cc. Had a scare with the power steering packing up - check out horror stories of costs online for a new rack, my local garage told me flat out they didn't want to do the job, was expecting a mega money bill. Fixed with a second hand ECU that I fitted myself for £30, but eye opening none the less.
Only other thing I changed was the rear dampers, discs and pads, but clutch was occasionally rattly and could see that being another costly bill. Again though, par for the course for any high miler - nothing unusual there.
There's nothing I didn't like about it really. Had an Elise before but it was still entertaining to drive, if in a completely different way. Only got rid as I'd just bought a house and simply couldn't afford to run it - saved £400 on insurance (other people on the policy along with their claims meant it was costing me near on £800), £200 on tax and whatever again on the petrol for the next year, it all adds up.
Dunno if it's worth mentioning, but I was also looking at Mondeo 2.5s with similar specs. I still rather fancy one - FWD but suspect it'd be a more entertaining steer, and wouldn't be surprised if consumables are a bit cheaper, there's a lot more of them about.
Looks very nice and also love those seats! Not sure why everyone loves leather, I just end up getting sweaty in it and slippy. Although the cooled seats are meant to be good.
What mpg did you average?
Looks like 2.5k for a new rack from Lexus! Crazy. I'll need to do a bit more research on this, had no idea. Also a lot of people also mention the engine loves to consume oil, any issue with that?
Oh jeez don't tell me the headlights are a common problem as well haha.
