50k now as money today is worth more than money tomorrow.

Also 150 a month is 1800 a year so a long wait for 50k which you could proably get 2% pa on as a deposit

£50k now.

Even if I live for the next 28 years taking £150 a month, inflation will devalue pretty significantly over that time.

£150 in 1990 would only be worth about £70 in today's money. You'd probably have to see at least 40 years of payments to get anywhere close in real terms.

£50k right now would be pretty bloody welcome. £150 a month would probably get frittered away.

Depends on personal circumstances. Do they have a mortgage? Are they looking to buy a house and so on. I would put £50,000 towards property but if mortgage free, I would still likely to take £50,000 as you can achieve far more with this than £150 per month.

It rather depends on age and the tax situation. If it's taxable as income and I was under 30 I might consider the monthly payment.

it depends on your age a little bit....if you are 60 its a no brainer. if you are in your twenties (and likely to live into your 90's) and live month to month like most then the guaranteed 150 may be better, especially when you factor in that a twenty something will potentially sink 35k of that into a new audi smile

50k as it could be used for a house deposit or other investments.

Room for one more? We can split the tab.

What? Who said £500? £150 a month would take more than 27 years to accumulate £50,000. By which time, £150 per month wouldn't be worth £150 due to inflation.

No one did apart from me.
Would 500 quid pcm tempt you away from the lump sum?

150 a month won't buy a solitary rizla by the time my life is over. Am pretty sure I can turn fifty grand into plenty more by the end

Would you rather:

• £50,000 now (cash) or...
• £150 per month for the rest of your life?

Asking for a friend
I am in my seventieth year, I've got cancer and high blood pressure. Can I have a minute to work that out?
