Was thinking of fitting a shift light to my Westie, but wasn't sure what I need. The car has an MBE ECU that supports shift lights, but I wasn't sure how it fits on. You can get complete units for about £50, but I guess I don't need one of them as my ECU supports this function already. Anybody had any experiance with this?

i bought a rev counter with a shift light for the ginetta a while back, it was about £40-£50 or so. one of the best things i've bought. now i'm thinking about moving it to the westfield ive just bought, for the main reason i cant see the propper rev counter very well at all!

If you have an output from the ECU all you need is this from RS

Steve

Sorry tried 4 times now but every time I paste the link Pistonheads screws it up.
Its a 52mm LED cluster of 50 red LEDs and costs £14.58

to tell you when to change gear

To gain the best acceleration you should change gear when the torque available at gear+1 is higher than current, usually most producation cars are designed such at that the red-line of the car is where you should change, but the moment you put that engine into a light chassis, modify it's power etc you change the entire characteristics of the drive train.

But surely to be able to set the shift light then you have to know when it is anyway, in which case, you dont need a light?

You can mount the light in line of sight, much easier than watching your rev counter for shift point. I find shift light quite useful on trackdays.

it'll likely be a red line indicator in this case

The light I was thinking of, if I could wire it in was this one. I shall have to see what model ECU I've got and fire an e-mail off the MBE.

in my experience that will be completely over the top and blind /distract you. You will end up with masking tape over it to dull it down. a single large(9mm) LED is all thats needed.
