Is it possible to transfer motorcycle NCB to car policy?
Discussion
Boring insurance question.
I have 2 cars and 1 motorcycle, so 3 separate insurance policies, full NCB on all 3.
I'm considering replacing the bike with a 3rd car. Can I transfer the bike's NCB to a new policy for the 3rd car?
I don't mind if I have to cancel the bike policy to start a car policy with another insurance company, but wonder if insurance companies are OK with using NCB in this way.
Thanks,
Darryl

I tried this several years ago and it wasn’t accepted by the car insurance Co. In all honesty I’ve lost faith that no claims really counts for much these days. I’ve just got back on two wheels and I initially put in 5 years no claims as that’s what I had when I stopped biking several years ago but when I couldn’t find any proof of this I changed it to 0 years and the premium didnt alter. As long as your not an obvious risk and not under 30 they will all be as competitive as possible to beat each other regardless of no claims. Usually involves picking the phone up though as opposed to to using an online comparison site.

Some might - you'll need to do some ringing around.

Q: Can I use my motorcycle/moped no claims discount on my car policy?
A: Yes, provided it isn't still being used on a current policy. We accept up to a maximum of four years no claims discount when you take out new cover with us. We will increase this for each claim free year up to a maximum of nine years.
For example, if you have five years claim free motorcycle no claims discount, we'll give up to four years when you take out your new policy and this will increase year on year.

The key thing about NCB is that there's no standard definition of what it is and how it works. Your current insurance company gives it (and possibly takes it away) according to its rules and a new to you insurance company accepts it according to their rules. The latter can vary hugely basically dependent on how keen the new ins co is for your business. Some will even match an existing one for an additional policy without 'taking it'.
So the answer is to contact many insurers and see what you get. And in the end it's the price versus the cover provided that matters.

No claims is the next PPI. One big con from start to finish and horrifically misleading. Protect your NCB, have a crash and premium shoots up etc etc I have 2 cars and 1 motorcycle, so 3 separate insurance policies, full NCB on all 3.

Beware insurance companies it’s coming and I know the QC who is bringing it.

Also tried it many years ago, and the answer was a big fat no from all insurance companies I tried.
On the other hand - because I had a theft on my motorcycle policy - that WAS counted by them when I got quotes for car insurance. Hardly seemed fair!
It is fair. If you'd also had a car when your bike was stolen, your ncb on the car would have been unaffected. On the other hand - because I had a theft on my motorcycle policy - that WAS counted by them when I got quotes for car insurance. Hardly seemed fair!
You're confusing 2 entirely different rating criteria.
1. Claims history - have you had any claims. That's either yes or no, and can affect every policy you have.
2. NCB - have you claimed on this particular policy and cost this insurance company any money. That only affects the one policy.

You’ve said this before, but still nothing is happening. There was a government review of motor insurance carried out several years ago and they decided that NCD needed some more clarity, as most people don’t understand what NCD is. You are one of themBeware insurance companies it’s coming and I know the QC who is bringing it.
If you don’t have protected NCD and make a claim, you get hit twice, once for the increased risk and once for the reduction in NCD if you protect it then you get hit once, for the increased risk. It makes perfect sense if you step back and take the emotion out of it. Of course what could happen is that insurers could simp,y withdraw this protection cover, or NCD completely.

And this is also why they have reduced max ncd to 9 yrs.
If you had 30 yrs ncd, had a prang, you lost 3 yrs, so you still had max. Protected ncd was a scam.
Now you get 9yrs max, have a prang, you drop back down to 3yrs ncd, ergo you need protected ncd.
As I said, thieving scum.
You really don’t understand it. They’ve extended NCD to 9years in some cases, the norm was always 5 years. The shorter term to build full NCD the better, as if you need to claim it’s quicker to build it back up. If you had 30 yrs ncd, had a prang, you lost 3 yrs, so you still had max. Protected ncd was a scam.

You got to c70% off with 5 years, those offering NCD up to9 years only offer an additional couple of percent for those extra years.
Ok then, Why don`t I
I`ll try and make it simple for you ok, so read slowly.
I build up 5yrs ncd I now have Max discount. With me so far.?
I continue to accrue ncd until I have 30 yrs on my renewal notice. Still here ?
I have a bump, I lose 3 yrs taking me to 27yrs, I also get a fault loading negating any saving but still have Max discount with my 27yrs.
No point in protected as I still have 22 yrs worth to go before affecting my Max ncd.
This is how it used to be. Simple really.
Nowadays, the limit the amount you can accrue to 9yrs and if you have a bump it drops to 3 yrs taking you below max ncd and doubly affecting your increase (remember the fault loading)
Ergo, you now need protected to limit the damage to your wallet.
It`s not rocket science so hopefully you get it now.
