My dad is currently running round in 2010 VW Polo 1.0l but wants a change to have something more comfortable and accessible for him and my mam who has back problems. He has looked at small SUVs as a potential solution with slightly higher seating to make it easier getting in and out.

So far his potential choices have been
Renault Captur
Seat Arona

I have suggested one of the Kia's (Stonic or Niro) but any other suggestions for a newish one. Budget isnt too much of a problem as they are both "poor" pensioners

The Fiat panda is very easy to get in and out of, pretty much step into it from memory. I remember an elderly relative remarking how easy it was to access, the thought of it hadn’t crossed my mind before! Very cheap and economical of course and there is a 4x4 option if required.

Edit: I know it isn’t an suv per se but if he is happy with the size of a super mini it could fit the bill. A captur will be the same size as a clio inside, give or take.

VW T-Roc?

My partner's parents have just bought one and, once specified with similar equipment, they're more comparable in price to a Kia Stonic than you'd have thought.

They're also a much nicer car to drive and be driven in.

I have tried to say that it wont be any bigger than current car. Not sure he will go for Fiat like.

The new Suzuki Ignis is nice for a micro SUV. It's easy to get in and out of.

Lots of options here; budget depending of course. On top of the Kias, Arona and Captur....

Citroen Cactus
Citroen C3 Aircross
Fiat 500X
Hyundai Kona
Honda HRV
Mazda CX3
Dacia Duster
Dacia Sandero Stepway
Nissan Juke
Peugeot 2008
Toyota CHR
Vauxhall Mokka
Vauxhall Crossland
Suzuki Ignis as already said
MG ZS
Suzuki Vitara (could be a bit big though but good value).

If a small MPV type car would do then these are worth a look too;
Ford BMAX
Jazz as already said
Hyundai ix20

Depends on their spend really, if they want high up but don't need too much space, the Mitsi ASX, X1 (or older X3) are good, and plenty like the amusement of the Nissan Juke. Which is utterly unrefined, but if your hearing has gone, you won't care.

And of course, 100% of owners love their Yeti...

I’d suggest to add the Suzuki SX4 to that list as well. Seems to be one of the pensioner chariots of choice given I’ve never seen anyone under 60 in one of them.

I'll add Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross into the mix. New out. My Dad (Motability) has just chopped his trusty Outlander in for one.

Yep. My retired father in law rated the Yeti as the best car he ever owned

That's high praise indeed, assuming of course that he didn't just own a rusty Austin Cambridge for 50 years before the Yeti hehe

Ha, no he went through the retired person classics of various Volvos, followed by a Honda Civic (the previous "best car ever") then the Yeti.
