Specifically, can I park here after the controlled hours?

It's Grocer's Hall Court in the City.

Doubt it if you are blocking the street. You may get a farmer with his tractor coming past and destroying your car.

Seriously - what on earth is the point of the yellow lines in this situation? I live in a small, narrow close barely one car width wide and still we have yellow lines painted there recently. Nobody in their right mind would park on the road yet we still waste money painting yellow lines?

No, I believe that even if you have no parking restrictions but are blocking the road so an Emergency Vehicle can't get past you are still breaking the law. Or at least if a Fire Engine wanted past you'd be looking at more then T-Cut to fix the scratches.

I agree that it's common sense not to park there, but some of these narrow dead ends in London are single yellow and some are double yellow, so it's not like they haven't thought about the difference. As for the fire engine scenario, fine, but I can take that risk...

its not about you taking a risk its about you risking other peoples health and safety. why would you do that knowing you have blocked access?

The lines are irrelevant. You'd be causing an obstruction... so, no, you cannot.

Highway Code suggests no

Rule 242
You MUST NOT leave your vehicle or trailer in a dangerous position or where it causes any unnecessary obstruction of the road.

That seems definitive or as near as makes little difference. I'll find another parking space.

Just because you can do something doesn't necessarily mean you should.

Assuming this wasn't a hypothetical, why on earth would you willingly park there? confused

single yellow line simply means parking restrictions according to sign
so if outside the sign's restrictions then the single yellow line doesn't prohibit parking

whether it is sensible otherwise is of course another matter...

But I suppose you could argue if OP was parked at the furthest end away from the road he is not causing an obstruction to passing traffic as there is none paperbag

The people living/working in the properties at that end may object though.

you have it in one....legally yes, logically no.

But what beats me is why they didn't put DYL there? Council paint cutbacks,or someone in an office didnt get off their bckside to phsycally check?

How would they know where to put the kerbs if they didn't have yellow lines painted there?

single yellows will normally have a "time Plate" on the road at regular intervals stating the parking restriction.....

so

if it says no loading between 0800-1000 and 1600-1800 you can't load or unload during those times

looking at the street there are door ways which could be service entrances to the premises, so within the permissions of the time plate the OP could park to load and unload his van. BUT as soon as he has finished loading/unloading his vehicle he has to move on (so no cup of tea/chat up receptionist as you would then be contravening the parking restriction

You also have to be reasonable to all other road users when using this road for access

Your van, your risk, read the time plate and be reasonable

That's the service road for The Ned. It is also used by cars and cabs turning around as they can't go through Bank Junction anymore. It is a busy spot especially week days. If you parked there I'd guess you would be picking the car up from the Met Police Car Pound.
