Hi all,

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced this problem or have an idea on what could be causing it..

When starting the car it will first idle at 1,250 with no issues then slowly lower to 750, when it does get down to 750 I can feel the car/engine start to vibrate on and off. It is not aggressive but I can feel it, almost like it is having slight difficulty staying on. It does not matter if the car is in drive/park etc when idle when the engine is hot or cold the same issue happens.

I have replaced the spark plugs and coil packs recently and that did not solve the issue, the only other thing I could think It be would be an injector maybe..

Even though the car drives perfect it always plays on mind because of the reliability issues with these engines. The car has been serviced every 5k and only has 31,000 miles (used as second car by me and previous owner).

Thanks in advance

Is it fine when the ac is switched on? If so, it may be just a very slightly too low idle speed - will need adjusting using vag com or similar

Hi Elliot,

Thank you for the reply, just the same when the AC is switched on, no issues with the AC.

May see if i can get it to idle at 800 as it does not start to vibrate until it hits the very bottom at 750.

Have you had the car scanned to find out if it's detecting misfires and if so which cylinder(s).

It could be an injector but as it's the twincharger engine it could also be low compression or a stretched chain, which sadly are both common on this engine of that date, irrespective on how well looked after the car has been serviced.

I have not Cuprabob. Is it possible to only miss fire when at idle at 750rpm and not at any other rpm range? As I believe I am not experiencing any misfires any where else in the rev range.

Will have to get it booked in to see if anything comes up.

750 rpm is a pretty low idle speed, and it would be normal for an engine to get a bit lumpy at very low rpm. Do you have any reason to think that either the idle speed or roughness are unusual for this engine type?

No reason, it could just be me being paranoid with the reliabilty issues i have read on the internet. Like i say everything else has been running perfect and pulls very well to red line. May just monitor it and if it gets even slightly worse get it booked in for a diagnostics check!

Well not looking too good this morning, not is it just vibrating but engine now making a knocking sound and shaking quite a bit. Still drives fine but something definitely seems to be wrong

That's a shame, but at least that has cleared up whether there is a problem.

Is it chain or belt drive? I’m sure I’ve read something on a Cupra around the same age to yours having problems with stretched chains which obviously caused knocking and idle problems. Get it to your mechanic and keep us updated if you can thumbup

Chain driven an unfortunately it is meant to be a nightmare to access if it is the problem! I have also read problems with the supercharger belt. I'm ringing to get it booked in first thing Monday I will keep you updated!

Good luck, hopefully it’s a cheap and easy fix for you.

Well to keep the thread updated.

Had a diagnostics check and it has shown up -

Random misfire
Misfire in cylinder 1
02 sensor bank 1

Then to top it off the chain has potentially got issues (going off the sound & oil consumption)

Have a warranty with Evan Halshaw, took the car to a trusted local garage for the diagnostic checks then booked it in with Evan Halshaw today.

Dropped car off this morning then had a phone call a few hours later saying "they do not have the tools to be able to check the timing chain, it will have to be booked in with a SEAT dealership for the work to be carried out on behalf of EH" - even though i told them on the phone when booking the car in that there was a potential issue with the chain...

Now the car is booked to go back into EH next week, they will then take it to SEAT...

What a hassle!
