Anyone drive the A316 from M3 J1 to exit to Snakey Lane or Hounslow?

My first time driving this route yesterday. I haven’t had a ticket or fine in over 36 years. A bit worried. Was still in motorway mode and passed the first camera at 70.

You can play around with these cameras in all sorts of ways. With the road near me, my favorite thing to do is stop half way through at the petrol station, fill it up to a full tank, go in, buy a few things, inflate the tires, check fluid levels, and then do a 100mph down the remainder to bring my average speed back up to what it ought to be.

I hope you are joking....you only need to pass two paired cameras over the limit, not just the first and last.

If you slowed down to below the limit after you noticed the first camera (which is the one just past the average speed camera sign and well into the 50mph limit) then you should be OK. You should be able to do 55mph average at least before there is any risk of a ticket, so 70mph for a quarter of the distance and 50mph for three-quarters, then that is 55mph average.

Quite true, but he's right. The only pair is either side of the fuel...

You mean a quarter of the time. You can do a third of the distance at 70 and 2/3 at 50 mph to achieve an average of 55 mph wink

If you are local to the road, you are probably going to know where each set of paired cameras are. If you are so local that your house is on the road, you can completely disobey the pair that your house's driveway intersects with on your morning commute, as your average speed is going to be a decimal value no matter how fast you go.

My understanding is that the point of average speed cameras was to stop people doing excessive speed between cameras and just slowing down for them. Not to offer a get out of jail card to anyone passing the first one at 70 in a 50, by slowing right down for the rest of the distance to the next cameras. Each camera acts as its own independent speed camera, as well as acting as an average calculator. So if you pass one at 70 in a 50, you're in bother, even if you break down and have a 3 hour wait for the AA before the next one.

Are you saying that you could hit camera 1 at 150 mph, immediately realise what you'd done, hit the breaks and drive the remaining 99.99% of the distance between to two cameras at 2mph, and thus be in the clear having achieved an average speed lower than the limit?

Drive it regularly. The cameras are rather unreliant so to speak from experience.

I go that way to work sometimes. Did it this morning. I'd love to be able to test them out but am usually bumper to bumper going nowhere after you hit Apex corner.

Each camera is just that - a camera with no other function. The speed calculation is done by the software in the remote evidential record and control unit which receives data from the cameras.
