It's a perspective shot again, the officer looks to be walking just behind it but you would see some shadow on the ground of the alligator close to the oficers shadow but you don't. The crane arm is long too so I would say the alligator is closer to the camera than you think.

I am certain you are right - the guy walking behind is at least 6-8 feet behind the Gator.

These critters are very abundant in Louisiana and Florida and frequently reach 12-16 feet and 800-1200 pounds. Alligator wranglers are common in these areas, so the killing of this fella must have had a particular circumstance associated with it. Alligators, unlike Crocs, are usually non-aggresive; however, there are some exceptions. On a serious note, they do taste very good!

Isn't that a croc though? I thought alligators had a more pointy snout.

It's taken with a wide-angle lens and the croc is off the ground, hence no shadow from it. The digger/cop shadows look OK to me.

One thing - if the croc is dead, why is its tail curved up?
