Thinking of buying a base golf...up to two years old with the 1.4 petrol engine...as I'm used to an old 1.9 PD diesel in an A 4 would the petrol Golf feel underpowered ? Interested to hear owners opinions and running experiences...thank you.

I've driven a few, the 1.4 TSI in it's latest incarnation is a great engine. Feels very light footed and punchy. Can easily achieve 50 mpg on longer runs

Just make sure you stick to the 150PS version offered in GT and R-Line trims, as this is 100% the sweet spot and a perfect all rounder. The 125 feels notably slower and is only offered with the lower end trims.

I have the lower powered version, does alright for a town car and occasional family trips.

Quite good economy.

I am about to hand back a 2016 125ps 1.4 TSi Golf, which I used for second car duties for two years.

I have to say the engine REALLY surprised me. The 125ps came with a really smooth 6sp manual box, so it would sit on the motorway and cruise at ease, and it was also very punchy & revvy around town. It didn't in any way feel weak/slow, or want to run out of puff.

As you've identified, the 150 means a jump up in model line, but that does also mean sacrificing some of the 'standard' kit of the Match Edition I had, which I wasn't prepared to do as it meant paying extra for things that were standard on the ME such as winter pack, leecy folding mirrors, discover nav etc. After test driving the 125ps it was clear that for my needs there was no need to go any sportier/faster, for a second car it really is that good.

Thank you for the replies so far....amazed and pleased no negative comments or common faults reported. Our use as a general family hack..... normally between 5-15 mile trips to kids clubs , days out and supermarket runs..so looks like the ideal transport for the job...best regards. Ian

My Son's got one, the 'Match' edition with the lower powered engine but it does drive well and is nicely equipped - I'd recommend it.

It'll have plenty of performance compared to what I'm assuming is a PD 105, if memory serves I think the torque figures on the 1.9TDI 105PS and the 122/125PS 1.4TSI are very similar. Obviously delivered in a different manner.

I have the 1.4t 150 in the B9 Avant A4 - it's a surprisingly good engine and doesn't struggle as the torque is quite low down despite the long gearing.

I would have no hesitation recommending it, particularly in a lighter Golf with presumably shorter gearing.

I am on 39mpg average for the first 3,000 miles despite busy commuting.

It will easily do 50mpg on a longer, calmer run even cruising at 80.

Just put deposit down on silver 65 plate match 125 bhp manual....bought from our local VW dealership so comes with a good warranty. It's only 21/2 years old and showing 25k but its condition looks newer. The docs show one ( private) owner with all servicing done at supplying dealer. Pick it up next Friday...many thanks for the owners replies...hopefully this car will match ( no pun intended) up with others good experiences. Regards. Ian
