BMW 650 - Crankcase Pressure Regulator Valve

Trying to locate an oil leak I removed the plastic engine covers. I noticed a small valve type unit with an outlet next to the oil filler cap.
A bit of research I found this is a Crankcase Pressure Regulator Valve.
Is this something that should be regularly replaced as part of routine service?
Also, what are the symptoms when these fail?
