Hi,

I seem to remember that we have a number of people who run web host companies (i.e. hosts not developers).

I will have (should be shortly, but not sure of ETA) a requirement for a business hosting package. Rather than just put the money to some random company I'd rather give it to a PH'er (not expecting mates-rates or owt as it's not my money! )

If anyone is interested, please get in touch via my profile.

Cheers,
Phil.

Would be interested to see some prices too. I had an idea for a (motoring related) site this morning. A little searching shows someone else has done the same thing first (bu**er) but I would be interested to see if it was worth doing something with a slightly different slant to keep me occupied whilst I am job hunting.

Thx,
Chris

Try Rico, he hosts website for PH'ers, will be going the same route myself soon. Good rates.

Bah, I wouldn't let that put you off. T'Internet is full of great ideas, just some are poorly executed.

The principle is the same as the high street. You wouldn't not open a shoe store just because there's another one in town... you'd open one but just get a USP.

Same with websites... after all PH does OK but there's plenty of motoring sites out there!

Go with the idea I say!!

Basically, a year's hosting is around £50, which gives you plenty of HDD space and gigs and gigs of bandwidth. Email, gallery, forum etc software is all included. On top of that you get a friendly PHer to talk to if you have problems, not some muppet in an Call Centre who doesn't know what 'website' actually means.

Drop me an email via my profile and say you're a PHer and I'll help you out.

..and turning it on its head, PH was set up because I thought I could do something different to the other motoring sites out there.

Phil,
sorry for the web hijack.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement. My idea is something that is still early days, being now almost 4 hours old, but will bear some further thought.

Rico, Y(w)HM - w=will!

Fer. Look forward to your mail.

The beauty of the internet is the overheads are low. Everyone can afford to have a site up and the sky is the limit on how far it will go.

Some kid in America set up a company that he sold for $300m before he was 22 or something daft.

If nothing comes from it, you'll have learnt a shed load and probably had some fun at the same time.

Thanks Rico. The requirement will be "business" ones i.e. Excellent up time, quick (it will probably be a fairly graphics intensive site), secure.

Oo, and it needs to be WINTEL (i.e. ASP, SQL Server (or possibly MySQL).

I'll pop an email your way.
Thanks,
Phil.

I'd be suprised if SQL Server support was included for £4 a month odd.

If it is, I'll have about 50 of the things...

£50/year is for linux based hosting... Windows is a few quid more

SQL Server is relatively expensive. Mysql is dirt cheap and superb (and completely on a par with MS SQL).

Totally agree with you... If I have my way (and I hopefully will) we'll be going the MySQL route. The discussions are in progress at the moment.

Evening All.

Glorious Day outside, put plays havoc with the laptop screen out here, its all Glare!

Anyway, I'm sure you've already clicked the Forum Sponsor add, been wowed by the stunning prices and service only to be disappointed when you realise its Linux only.

Windows hosting is by its very nature more expensive. Windows Server 2000 / 2003 Costs (you need Server as opposed to the cheaper Web Edition as 2003 WE WONT run MSSQL), plus £1k+ for SQL license, plus a beefier box due to windows memory and cpu overheads.

That's not to say its not an option, Its just not 'as cheap' an option.

Now, You say you need ASP and MySQL.. these can BOTH be found on Linux systems... if its ASP.NET you need, then you're back onto windows again.

You mention Secure, is this REALLY important to you? or just important enough to say, but not to really want to spend on?

I ask as the only way to be REALLY secure is on a Dedicated Server, this way no one else is attracting people to the server, no one else is using the same resources as you, hogging the CPU or writing buggy code etc.

Obviously your OWN server costs more again (moving into £1.5k pa+ for a Branded Wintel Box)

www.serverstream.net/windows.html
Dont worry about the listed specs PH'rs always get a healthy upgrade FOC

Another option you have is Colocation, this is where YOU have your Own server (in a 1u/2u/4u chassis) which you install your own OS and software on, then simply hand over to us, and we install it into our Suite at one of the Datacentres.

It can all get a little confusing, to make life simple, just sit down, work out what you're REALLY after, prioritise the key aspects (Uptime, Support, Speed of Network, Security, Physical Access etc) then, work out JUST how much you are willing to spend...

Then, I'll happily have a chat with you and walk you thru your various options..

Let someone else take away the worries of your server

Hi Jamie,

Wow, what a comprehensive post. I have to admit I didn't know that ASP could run on Linux - hence the request for a WINTEL server.

I'll do as you say and throw together a proper list of what is required and why. You're right, the secure thing is just standard type security but by no means any more. No real sensitive data is going to be used.

Thanks again and I'll be in touch!

Cheers,
Phil.

There were several projects to get ASP on Nix, Two main ones were ChilliSoft ASP! and Mod_ASP (apache foundation)

The ChilliSoft one was an excellent product, but cost £1k+ back 'in the day' It was so good, that It ended up being bought by Cobalt for use on their RaQ Servers (Cobalt Were bought out by SUN for several £Billion).

Sun Cobalt servers now run ASP on a unix based platform, however Sub halted development of the Cobalt range, as such no ASP.Net was ever 'developed', so a Wintel machine is needed for this.

GL with the project.

There is, however, the Novell backed Mono project that enables you to run ASP.NET webforms and web services on Linux/Apache.
