For this reason. Unless I was buying a Track toy only. I would always go for the Turbo.
Don,
GT3's are nowhere nearly as scary as you think, i was very nervous on my 1st time out in mine, and was waiting for the arse end to step out and bite me at any time, thing is, it was the opposite, and from the the box, they understeer quite a lot, and they're very controlable, as you are getting constant feedback from the steering wheel, and seat.
I believe this has now brought my driving on leaps and bounds, and am glad to be without the likes of PSM.
G.
Why not just get a GT3 and get Racelogic traction control installed? It'll cost about 1.5-2k fitted and is programmable. You can set what angle of drift you require on wet roundabouts and it has dry/wet settings etc. Impressive bit of kit. Doesn't apply brakes etc. like PSM, just works using wheel sensors and engine management to restrict fuelling, but it could be what you need. Why let the lack of traction control stop you getting the car you want?

Traction control worries me, are we going to end up with legions of sports car drivers utterly dependant on TCS to stay on the road, and with no ability to modulate the throttle for themselves?
ABS I definitely agree is worth having on the road, but TCS misses the point of a sports car imho.
Have you guys actually driven a car with PSM?
Glenn I know has...
PSM: Its wonderful. It does not get in the way on track (provided you are trying to put in a quick one and not get it sideways on every corner). And if you felt it *did* you can *switch it off!*
On road its bloody marvellous. Sure - if you habitually see the PSM light you are a total nutter. But nasty unexpected changes in road surfaces, diesel patches, you name it - the PSM will *help*.
PSM is *so* much more than Traction Control.
Now - if you are a good driver you will virtually never see the PSM light. I'm just glad to know its there, ready to step in and help out if I have a senior moment or if something truly out of the ordinary occurs.
I also drive a TVR. With no ABS and no Traction Control etc etc and so I'm quite happy to take responsibility for my own driving...but if a PSM style system had been available on the car of my choice...well I'd have had it!

Don is correct - PSM is a fantastic system and no-doubt stops MANY crashes on the roads, especially in the wet. I have driven on track in a boxster with and without PSM and you would be surprised at exactly how little it comes on - you can get a bit sideways, in fact the only time I found it "intrusive" was one of the corners at Knockhill which finds the rear offside wheel lifting off the ground - at this point it would cut power. If you find it coming on a lot you need to get your driving sorted out.
The racelogic TC system very much interests me as the GT3 most definitely is a handful in the wet and having the ability to adjust the level of slip, and switch it entirely off for track work sounds like a great system to me. I almost bought this earlier this year, but concerns over warranty issues stopped me.

but do 996 GT3's (phase 2) have PSM or traction control as standard.
Bugger the GT3 is not for me and the other half then !
