BMW 4 series Gran Coupe buying advice
Discussion
Hello all
I'm new to this forum so I hope this is the right place for this.
I'm looking at finally replacing my mk5 golf and have opted for a 4 series Gran Coupe. I have always wanted a BMW and now I finally can afford one with my new job.
I just had a few things I wanted advice on as I've never spent over £7k on a car before!
Anything would be an upgrade for me but I fancied the 430d or 435d just because of the power and the idea of if I'm going to do it I might as well do it properly! I also like the Idea of x drive for safety and grip in wet conditions.
I am worried about the potential for a sharp deprication due to :
1) Potential for a new shape 4 series Gran Coupe being released, it's been out for 4 years now
2) further steep deprication due to the new anti diesel laws
I was budgeting for a deprication of about 6-8 k over 3/4 years, am I better off getting an x drive or a petrol to reduce the deprication potential?
Thanks a lot guys

Against any depreciation ,as a result of a subsequent model , I’d balance the fact you’ll get a much greater discount on the current model. So I wouldn’t worry much about that, too hypothetical.
I’d place greater consideration on whether you need a diesel or whether your type of driving suits a diesel. If you’re in a position to really benefit from the fuel economy (high miles and long journeys) then that could be far more beneficial than any depreciation cos of the diesel backlash.
If diesel isn’t necessary , then the B58 in the 440i is a great engine. I can’t recall if 440i comes with X drive , but do you really need it? Winter tyres will deal with ice , snow if that’s a concern . And you should be able to drive a fast car in the wet ! Judy be careful
I think you should try different versions and see which gives you the greatest driving pleasure. Sounds like you’ve worked hard and earned it .

Thanks for that, I think a diesel would be good I do about 200 miles a month on the motorways.
So you mean the imminent release of a new model won’t affect the price? I don’t mind holding off if that means some savings.
I don’t really know if the xdrive is really necessary it’s just the reassurance in wet conditions I’ve never driven a rear wheel drive car apart from the test drive

You gotta give a little more.
Are you buying brand new? If so, expect to loose 15k in 4 years.
Also you do 200 miles a month on the motorway. But what is that as a percentage of the rest of your driving.
Finally X drive is ok but buying proper tyres for the conditions is better value for money.

200 miles a month?? So less than most Grannies at a guess. I only live 15 mins from work and yet I do 100 miles a week on a motorway easily with just my commuting.
BMW tends to replace models approx every 7 years I think, with an LCI half way through. I think you’ll be alright on the current 4 for a few years yet.

I mean the new model , on release, won't likely offer such high discounts so your depreciation % on a higher discounted current model will be higher, but the real cost of depreciation, as you bought it for a lot less, if anything will be lower. Plus the new model could be a few years away, so kind of arbitrary, surely? So you mean the imminent release of a new model won’t affect the price? I don’t mind holding off if that means some savings.

200 miles a month is not really diesel territory, my second car almost does that

Therefore I'd seriously look at petrol. I looked a configurator , there isn't an X Drive option on 440i but I don't think that's worth going diesel for. A commonly used broker, puts base discount at 10k plus for 35d , thus with the slightly lesser discount on 40i diesel is only about 1k more but with X drive, from my experience, you're going to burn through tires quicker (maybe brake pads) so on low miles, you may not even recover the extra cost, plus if diesel hate increases, the car will take a hit.
My first albeit old BMW was my first rear-wheel drive, I didn't find it difficult to get used to ; it was a lot more fun. I just made sure I had decent tires on it, not even winters and I survived a "white out" on m4 when cars were spinning off around me.
The new G20 3 Series will be launched at the Paris motor show this September, so bear that in mind that from then the 4 Series will be based on the old architecture. The new 4 Series won't come along for 12-18 months after that.
There is a high probability that discounts on the older 3 and 4 will increase after September until all the new range is launched, so definitely push for as big a discount as you can.
Don't rule out a pre-registered one either, Autotrader and BMW's Approved Used Car site will be awash with them - but better those as a cash buyer as the finance deals won't be as good on those.

I think judging from advice so far is that I’m leaning towards a petrol instead now.
The 435i is showing as 26mpg urban which is quite low!
I’m going to have a look at the 428i and 430i they look like they’ll give me a good balance of power and economy.
With regards to buying options I’m not too sure what the best thing to do is, they are running a 0% interest on all new 4 series this month but it was quite expensive, a 4 series at a base price of £39k was quoted for £5k deposit and £400 a month to me which was what swayed me to just getting a used one from autotrader.
I wasn’t sure how flexible they are with these prices? Also, with the pre registered cars, they are already discounted, surely they won’t knock more off will they?

I bought my first brand new car last year. I'm 60. Always bought used before, but the finance deals and discounts available on a new car made it more cost effective than a used one.
My 440i will happily return over 40mpg at a 70mph motorway cruise, although I havent seen anywhere near 50, even through the numerous 50mph roadworks sections. It is almost as economical as my previous 335d E91. I do tow a caravan now and then, and this drops the consumption to 15mpg (wince). 4000 mile overall average is still 33mpg. Amazing, given the performance.
No X drive available.
I've never had winter tyres.
Quiet. Comfortable. Fast. Lovely gearbox (and I don't like Autos). Sounds a treat when you give it some. Best all round car I've ever had.

Picked up my 440i Gran Coupe just under two weeks ago, really happy with it.
Nicely sized and really practical with the hatch boot; wouldn't want anything much bigger personally. Seems well built, and I only added the M Sport Plus pack as the spec's already pretty good.
I don't think the new 4 series is due for a while, but I bought on PCP anyway so I'm not overly concerned about depreciation - it's all factored into the agreement. I got about £12k off list price, plus 0% APR so I was happy with the deal.
I did think about a 430d, but it was the same insurance cost, tax etc, and lower incentives to buy compared to the 440i so the only difference in running costs between the two was the fuel. So petrol won! The 435d xdrive was significantly more to insure for some reason.
Surprisingly economical for a 3.0 engine - even with only 400 miles on the clock I can easily get above 40mpg on a mixed, moving commute. Consistently gets far better MPG than my previous Alfa Giulia Veloce in the same conditions, and even better than my previous VRS 230.
Sounds amazing too, though I'm still gently breaking it in so not really going above 4000rpm for the first 1200 miles.

I paid around those figures for a brand new 440i with almost 3k worth of extras (metallic paint, MSport Plus, reversing camera).I wasn’t sure how flexible they are with these prices? Also, with the pre registered cars, they are already discounted, surely they won’t knock more off will they?
Pre-reg cars will work out more on finance, they're only offering the hefty deposits and 0% APR on new cars. Mine was a stock car, brand new and unregistered, hence being able to get it for a decent price.
I had to choose from stock though, so ended up with a reversing camera I didn't really want. Oh well!

I had a quick look on A/trader and the newest 435i was around 16 plate, so 2 years old. That's a different prospect, you'll be out on manufacturer's warranty in not time, so I'd take into account what the other responders have said here and look at what deals you could get on 440i I think judging from advice so far is that I’m leaning towards a petrol instead now.

Ie buying used and selling or leasing or PCP. It’s a minefield out there!
Just out of interest if you don’t mind me asking what deal did you get?

Good point about the warranty I didn’t account for that in my planning! I will keep looking and get in touch with the local BMW dealer hopefully they can do better than the £2000 contribution they offered me last timeMohass89 said:

It was £5k down then just under £400/month over 4 years at 15k miles/yr. My aim is to swap into a new deal at 3 years, but if it doesn't make sense financially then I'll sweat the deposit fully over the four years and buy an additional years warranty.Ie buying used and selling or leasing or PCP. That's for a brand new 440i with metallic paint, m sport plus pack and reversing camera, RRP just under £50k. It had around a £5-6k dealer discount, then about the same on the BMW deposit contribution.
Worked out £30 more / month than my previous Giulia Veloce, and it's a fair bit more car IMO.
The wife got the 435d msport x drive in Nov. Same deal as has been explained so far.
( 0%).
The torque of this engine is mind blowing. Great for everyday use.
Engine is euro cat 6. Doesn't need any add blue.
I'd drive both the diesel and petrol and see which one you prefer for your type of driving.
I've a E92 M3 and it feels as fast.
