New car needing DPF filter at only 4000 miles
Discussion
Hi all, I’m hoping someone can help me with a problem I have.
I brought an evoque convertible only three months ago, the car was sold to me from a dealership at only 2000 miles and roughly 9 months old.
I had an amber warning come on the dash board advising me to get to a motorway and drive 60 mph for 20 mins, only 10 mins later that warning went straight to red where it told me to get the car to a dealership, the car then was restricted to only 30 mph.
This was the first time I ever received this message and it didn’t give me time to act.
After calling Land Rover it’s been explained to me that it’s my fault as my style of driving is wrong, the car isn’t suitable for round town use and I should be driving on a motorway regularly.
Ive mentioned that the car has only done 4000 miles and explained this shouldn't have happened this early on, I also drive the car from Newcastle to London and I did a round trip from London to sunmerset, surely these are long enough journey to clear the filter out?
Land Rover have refused any responsibility and are charging me £1500 for the work, I’ve been told it’s not under warrwntly.
I understand what a DPF filter is and how it works but surly it shouldn’t have happened this early on?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks
Jo.

Hi OP, welcome to PH!
The law is on your side on this - certainly with a car as new as yours. If the fault manifests itself in the first 6 months of your ownership, the onus is on the dealership to prove that it wasn't present at time of purchase. You don't have to prove anything - I think it used to be the Sale of Goods Act, but now it's called something different. I'm sure someone with better legal knowledge than me will be along shortly to advise how this should go.
In the worst case you may be able to reject the car and get your money back.
I suspect that the first owner may have caused the problem by doing loads of short journeys then unloaded the car before the problems started.
Over the last few years, LR seem to have quite a bad name for both reliablity and customers service. In your place I wouldn't be agreeing to pay for the repair - try contacting LR UK or plastering it on their Twitter/Facebook/whatever page!

I purchased the car from a dealership and it was a demonstration vehicle so I imagine this is where the problem started, they’re also denying anything is wrong with the software as to why I didn’t get a warning before hand.
Surely I should have a had a few warnings before the filter had completely filled up?

It’s a fairly well known problem with the newer engines. Happened to mine, early service light anyway, dealer did an extra free oil change and re-set the service. But your driving style sounds like it shouldn’t be an issue really. Why isn’t it covered under warranty? Is a dpf considered a consumable now! I’d be onto Landrover customer services ASAP, certainly don’t pay up. You mention Newcastle, is that the dealer location, sounds like a type of rock? If so not heard many glowing reports.......
Customer relations are involved and no help at all, they say the DPF filter isn’t under warenty as it’s the customers responsibility. The workshop where it is isn’t allowed to repair without the authority of customer relations and they’re the ones that are refusing.
I purchased from Newcastle and to be fair they are the only helpful ones, they’ve told me to keep at it as I shouldn’t have to pay. It’s just getting very stressful now as it’s been going on two and a half weeks.
Today I’ve been told to return the courtesy car or I’ll start to be charged, so no idea how I’m getting to and from work from now on.
Not the service I would have expected from Land Rover at all.

Sounds really poor all round! You certainly wouldn’t be the 1st to have it repaired under warranty, or maybe they’ve done so many now they’re looking for excuses.
There’s definitely a software update for that model and engine which is something to do with dpf problem.
Not sure what you do next, can’t see how it’s your problem to pay for. We’re you given specific instructions on how you had to drive the car on purchase, no, didn’t think so..... If you haven already google it, you’ll see you’re far from alone...

The only thing that was mentioned to us was the Ad blue.
This is actually my second car as my first one was stolen, in the first car there was a message telling me to put ad blue in. In this car it already had ad blue. (I’m not sure if that has anything to do with the filter)
But no they were quite happy taking the payment from me without telling me the car wasn’t suitable for my style of driving.

Sadly I don't think the OP is alone in the experience on DPFs and JLR products. My parents have a friend (long term JLR customer) who had a brand new RRS early last year. The DPF problem was persistent and JLR replaced it several times, with the car having to be recovered twice- the 2nd time the JLR assist guy went with him to the dealership (he'd been out to fix the car before) as he said it was totally unacceptable. The friend handed his RRS back and took a petrol powered new Disco so he wouldn't have any further DPF issues!
I've read that there were a batch of cars that had faulty DPFs on Disco Sports, so it's possible the same issue applies to Evoques with the same engine....get yourself over to one of the Evoque forums and ask if anyone has had the same experience.
IMO, JLRs customer service isn't up to scratch, though they're not helped by the number of cars that have problems through poor build issues and the dealer network is struggling to cope - they're selling so many cars, they appear to have lost sight of looking after their customers properly. If the DPF won't work in normal usage, the car isn't fit for purpose IMO.
OP, I suggest you correspond with the main honcho at the supplying dealer and escalate matters. Also get hold of the name of the head of customer services at JLR and do the same. Good luck

We've got a 2016 Evoque which SWMBO uses for LOTS of short journeys (i know, I know) and probably two extended A road journeys a week. Never had the DPF light come on.
Good luck with JLR customer services. In my experience they are an absolute shower of s*te and the reason why we'll never buy another JLR product once the lease is up on the Evoque.
They wanted £1,000 plus VAT to supply and fit a new door card because a cheap plastic speaker cover had cracked and they refused to supply it as a separate part. I bought a metal speaker cover off eBay for £6 which is of better quality than the OEM part.
The bulls
t excuses were unreal a) the speaker cover is a). part of the door card and is not detachable (No it's not and yes it is),
b)if you replace it with a non-original part it may affect your warranty. Oh ok - so if my gearbox falls out you'll blame it on the car having a different £6 speaker cover.
The car went in for a main dealer service and had to be taken back twice because the LOW COOLANT light kept coming on.
I know stuff goes wrong with new cars. The trick is to manage the punter's reasonable expectations. Not deliberately antagonise them with lies and bullcrap.
