Hello

I bought a 2005 reg VW Golf 106 FSI in February. It is a very well looked after car, only 47,000 on the clock, and runs perfectly - cost about £3,000. I know next to nothing about cars, so feel free to talk to me like I'm stupid when explaining the problem to me (if you know what it is).

Recently I can sometimes hear the noise of something revolving. It only seems to happen when I've been on the Motorway and I'm coming to a stop after coming off at the junction - so I think it is when I have been travelling at high speed. My girlfriend reckons it's coming from the back of the car.

The only way I can describe it is that it sounds like something that has been revolving really fast coming to a stop and you can hear the last few seconds of its revolutions - a bit like rolling a round pen across your desk (random example but closest noise I could come up with). Then, when the lights go green and I accelerate, I can hear the same noise but with the revolutions getting faster - but again, only for a few seconds.

Hopefully it's something I can fix with a bit of WD40, or just tighten it up with a spanner - but also want to make sure something isn't about to fall off. Whatever it is doesn't appear to be affecting the performance of the car as it still runs smoothly - I just want to nip whatever it is in the bud.

Thanks in advance

Hi, i can't help with your problem but my old Golf R used to have the opposite.

Noise when i accelerated. Turned out it was the other half moaning about our velocity.

Fixed it by divorcing her.

Of course none of that happened. its just a sunny Friday with 26 minutes to go until i can leave the office.

I'd be looking at the condition of the tyres and brakes.

Does the noise stop or partly go away if you put your foot on the brakes?

Sounds like the shields on the rear brakes. They are cheap crap and become detached.

Just reach through/round the wheel and give a little wiggle/rotate see if lose which they shouldn’t be.

Thanks

The noise doesn't go away when braking.

Someone else has suggested it could be Wheel Bearings?

I'll try your suggestion with the brake shields too.

It could well be some shot bearings in the rear hub. Jack up the rear of the car and spin the rear wheel and wobble the wheel to look for play within the wheel hub to try replicate the noise. driving
