I am looking at some input in a potential car change, first child is on its way, and my F31 330d won't be quite big enough for our long trips with buggy, dogs and the usually guff.

My 2013 330d Touring is a great car, with the ZF8 speed. I have been looking at 2013/14 A6 S-Line Avant's, but for a lower mileage it would be a 2.0TDI!

I know the engines don't compare, but I have a few questions,

  • How is the engine noise in the cabin of the A6? aswell as road/wind noise?
  • Auto box also, how do they compare with the ZF8 speed?
Thanks!

The 2.0TDI use the CVT if you're looking at the older ones - they are reasonably reliable but no where near as good as the S Tronic.

The road noise, tyre noise etc is better than the 3 and 5 series, even without RFT fitted on the BMWs. BMW can't seem to do noise suppression as well as audi/mercedes at all. However for driving "dynamics" the 330d will of course be better, but I don't imagine you'll be taking either car for a B road blast biggrin

The thing you will not like is the 2.0TDI engine. They are very noisy compared to a 6 pot diesel and harsher, more vibey etc etc

Is a 3 series estate definitely not big enough for a new born, dogs and luggage?

What about a roof box for the occasional times you need more space?

Such an incomparable choice OP. I can’t believe you won’t regret the swop. As advised, definitely spend the money on a roof box. 100% better option, and much cheaper too.

I have seen a video of the CVT autobox, and I just don’t like the way it works, almost takes me back to my moped days!

How does the STronic compare to the ZF?

The 6 pot is smooth engine all round, that’s the problem with the 2.0TDI, will it be shock to the system!

I must admit the ride on the 19” RFT is harsh, and the road noise isn’t great more so on longer trips to my parents 700 mile round trips.

Well, it isn’t small, but I like space, my wife thinks it’s fine, but I do 700mile round trip monthly to visit my parents and the dogs would possibly have less room without a roof box. The A6 Avant boot is over 100L bigger, and wider.

S tronic vs ZF overall the ZF is probably a better box, however the S tronic is quite close. My brother has an S tronic 2012 A5 3.0TDI and my dad has a ZF 3.0TDI A8 and to be honest both are very smooth. The s tronic shifts are slightly faster but not much in it, but at low speed there is sometimes a bit of "shunt" with a dual clutch that the ZF smooths out nicely

However I don't think you will be dissapointed
What is your rough budget? Can you not stretch to a 3.0TDI A6?

Thanks, as long as the S Tronic is smooth and doesn’t hunt etc .

I have around £16000, I wanted a 3.0TDI, with the MMI Plus, but for my budget the mileage is anything from 90-110k

Id rather buy a roof box for the occasional full load trip than suffer a 2.0d Audi personally.

Infact I'd rather 'retire' the dogs than own an Audi, but i really dislike Audi so maybe theres a but of unrealistic bias.

Yeah, test drove an Audi recently. When you throw that much money at a car, it is never going to be bad, but I think some people get along with BMWs and some people get along with Audis. I didn't get along with the Audi, so make sure you test drive it.

Also beware going from a 6 cyl diesel to a 4 cyl diesel. It is not just the reduction in power, a 4 cyl vibrates more, makes a less pleasant noise and sounds a bit like a tractor to me. IMHO a 4 cyl turbo petrol is easier to live with than a 4 cyl diesel.

Are you sure its an stronic box ? the 3.0 was a CVT box unless it was a Quattro in which case it was a Torque convertor box. However the STronic box and ZF should not be compared the ZF is far superior, the Stronic does not change gear as smoothly and does a really annoying thing with the revs when changing up.

I actually rate the CVT box much higher than the Stronic, its much smoother and uses the power better. The 2.0tdi is ok but you are going to notice the lack of grunt. If you do need a bigger car try a 5 series or E Class, the 520d is much pokier than the 2.0 Audi.

The A6 3.0 CVT is not a bad car at all though if you must have an Audi

The A5 uses the S tronic yes, it's not bad at all TBH. We haven't noticed anything with the revs when upchanging? It just performs like a normal dual clutch box

I would take a higher mileage 3.0d A6 over a lower mileage 2.0d any day of the week

What about a leftfield option:

XF 3.0/3.0S

I think these are one of the better looking estates & you can get a 3.0 with sensible miles too, the only downside is that the infotainment isn't as good as it's German rivals, it works well & the sound quality is great it's just not as intuitive as some others.

Ah so its the quattro version then A6 took some time to get the stronic box, i've never really liked it, i actually preferred the cvt box as it worked better in normal day to day driving.

My cousin has the old C6 A6 avant 2.0TDI with the CVT and it is quite smooth but I don't think I could get used to the way it revs constantly

id be wary around 3 litre jags - there is some indication of engine issues with diesel in the engine oil that is an issue with the dpf that causes this.

3.0 audi with the s tronic every time. its not a sports car but a comfy cruiser that happens to have a bit of grunt. and with a remap.... 300 horses.
