I'm looking for a small, cheap vehicle that I can fit plywood sheets (8x4ft - 2400m x 1220mm) within.

Ideally I want a comfy little mpv type thing, as I will also use it as a runaround/rubbish tip hack and general dogsbody. I definitely don't want a van or diesel anything.

Does anyone run a small MPV or such like that will fit the bill?

I think you're going to have to make a choice, either get a 'little mpv' that can't take full size sheet materials or buy a big mpv that can.

That is a large size sheet and I don't think you'll find a car/mpv that will fit it, perhaps with the exception of van derived mpv's like VW caravelles, Hyundai i800, Merc Vaneo etc. Fitting that kind of sheet size usually requires a medium size van like a transit, transporter etc.

Have you considered a specific top box for fitting sheet materials into? Something like this:

https://www.roofarack.co.uk/

Then (within reason) you can get any car you want and pop the sheet materials on the roof when you need to.

My last car was a 2014 Galaxy. Even that wasn't long enough to take an 8ft sheet. With all the rear seats folded I could only just fit an 8ft fence post in diagonally.
I think you'd have the same problem with the width between the rear arches

How often do you need to move sheets of material around?

A trailer or delivery would probably work out cheapest surely.

Not often at all really. I like to make things as a hobby, and am often frustrated when I have to buy large plysheet sizes of anything. (plywood, composites, etc). The other use of the vehicle will be for the other half to go into London and see her old mum once a week, but she won't take any of her nice cars. So we have a little mini clubman to snot around in, but I can't fit large sheets into it. I don't really want to a large mpv, and have taken note of what others have already said about galaxy size, etc. The roof rack idea is ok, but trying to fit more than two sheets on a rack can be a PITA. Ideally I want something that I can just chuck the rear seats away and more or less slide half a dozen sheets in. A trailer is a good suggestion, but I don't want to have to leave a trailer out on the drive.
