Does this exist?

My commuting costs are significant, around £12k a year which I pay for directly.

I am a PAYE higher rate tax payer. Is there anyway of getting any tax relief on this amount?

Very much doubt it, but just curious. I know there would be if I was contracting...

Nope....

You can claim expenses for travelling to a temporary place of work if asked to by your employer, but nothing for travelling to and from a single place of work that Im aware of.

If you were contracting it wouldn't be a permanent place of work.

Need to be careful with this as I think HMRC only needs to establish that it’s regular.

You choose where to live and where to work. HMRC view is if you choose to live a long way from where you work it is entirely your own responsibility to pay the cost. If you get asked to work somewhere else temporarily by your company then it is not your choice and, therefore, a different matter.

Arguably people who choose to travel a long way should be taxed more as they're causing pollution and clogging up the roads.

Does anyone choose to commute long distances?

If you own a home, it's not exactly cheap to move, and in a lot of cases not possible to move closer to work.

For me to get a similar sized property close to work I would need a massive pay rise. Even then what security to you have.

At my last company I was part of a new team, one bloke moved to be near work. 2 years later the contract we were working on was lost to a competitor. The bloke is now moving his family half way across the country to where the TUPE role is.

His costs must be approaching 20k (after tax) and his kids have moved school twice....fk that.

Actually in the real world you work where you can get a job and live where you can afford the housing costs. Then you get reamed by the expense of commuting.

Haha exactly.

I thought that was the case,

To be fair, I chose the commute and i choose where to live. I am happy with the arrangement, just wondered if I was missing out on any ££

Cheers for the responses

Out of sheer noseyness can I ask what your commute is to end up costing £12k a year?
