Hi all,

At the moment I drive a 2009 Astra 1.8 auto, with 46k miles. The car has been quite reliable but with appalling mpg. Considering I paid 2k for it, it's not too bad but I've been on longish motorway runs once/twice a month and commuting 35 miles daily on A roads and I was thinking of something more comfortable (seats are not very comfy, though still better than my wife's Polo) and frugal. On top of that, I also drive 2k miles on round trips to central Europe twice a year, so it needs to be reliable as well.
At the moment I'm thinking about going diesel but I read nothing but horror stories about engines prematurely failing and huge repair bills on the cars I'm considering (Volvo V60 D2, Skoda Octavia TDI 1.6 and 320d) so I am completely clueless.
My budget is 7k, but can stretch to 8k for the right car.
