Returned from a holiday with a group of friends to find one of them had an NIP from Glasgow for a bus lane offence. They kindly included pictures of what looked like a very recent Skoda Octavia estate on her 14 plate number. Bearing in mind her car was in and around Reading all week and is a Mazda 3 saloon her car has clearly been cloned. Advised her to respond as requested on the form providing pictures of her car, pointing out that the one committing the offence is clearly not hers and that they should hopefully drop the charge. What more should she do regarding the cloned plate? I think this could be the start of many possible NIP letters frown

Report it to the police, you have the evidence someone has committed an offense.

You could also ask the DVLA for a plate change.

Tell her not to worry.
If she can prove where she was/ lives I guess they will get cancelled quite quickly.

Years ago I had a Red Megane coupe and I started receiving A LOT of speeding offences, parking tickets etc. and the car in all the images was a blue RX8

I contacted the police claimants (3 different forces) and informed them it wasn’t me etc. Made zero difference, I ended up in court with the police prosecuting me (or attempting to anyways)

Was totally surreal and when the judge read the details she lambasted the police for taking it this far and wasting her time. I was asked to swear to the court that it wasn’t my vehicle etc. It was all thrown out at that point. Took months to get there though and was treated like a criminal in the run up which was just disgusting

Good luck getting it sorted!

Did you name and shame in the local paper(s)? They relish stories like this?

If it were me: Report it to the Police and buy a cheap "private" reg to put on my car, to save future aggravations of having to prove where my car was at the time of the various offences.

Wouldn't the original number still be linked to you at your address?

No, once the private plate goes on the car, the original plate becomes unregistered so if the clone car pings an ANPR camera it will flag up as unregistered and hopefully get a tug.

I had someone running around in an RX8 insured in my name a few months ago - Asian chap with himself as a named driver. He would get insurance and not pay for it, which would get it cancelled but for a couple of weeks he’d not ping on ANPR. If a vehicle isn’t registered tickets default through to the insured. First I knew was a load of speeding and parking tickets. I just called the ticket issuing office in Hyde and spoke to a very nice policeman who just sorted it on the phone, told me to ignore any more and even sorted me out with the Cheshire constabulary speeding tickets. Nice chap.
