640d Gran Coupe offers
Discussion
Hi All
There seem to be a load of 640d's with 10 - 200 miles on at about £30k less than list on Autotrader at the moment....
Is there a catch? These seem great value at £38k for a brand new one, am I missing something?
I am currently in a Range Sport which is giving me no end of grief with the dreadful build quality. As such I am eyeing up the new X5 but don't know if I can wait that long, so thinking of an in between car for say 12 - 18 months.
The 640d wasn't really on my radar as I'd been thinking of sticking to a 4 x 4 (I had a 640d coupe before and loved it, and then had an M6 Coupe, but have got used to the 4 doors these days), so the 640 GC is a good left field option which ticks most boxes....

Production has ended of the F series cars entirely.
Additionally they were never selling for anywhere near list when ordered new so pre reg pay not attention to the "original list price" as it was a pure work of fiction.
20% - 25% on new orders was common so that might give you an indication of whether it was a good deal or not.
When visiting my BMW dealer there is still a LOT of love for the GC. Very few of the sales guys I have met can really say they like the 6GT as a "replacement", as for the 8, personally from what I have seen I am not that excited.
Surprised you are looking at a 640D GC over an M6 GC though? Unless your mileage makes the 640 more attractive? (although IMO I find the 640 enough either way you put it!)

It's a good point you make on an M6 GC, I've been toying with this idea myself since my post.Additionally they were never selling for anywhere near list when ordered new so pre reg pay not attention to the "original list price" as it was a pure work of fiction.

I only do about 8k miles a year so I don't have a reason to go for the diesel in truth. The 640d idea came about by accident, purely through browsing auto trader and seeing the crazy value of 30k plus off a brand new one. But you are right, an M6 GC can be obtained for similar/less money which makes it an interesting option and a good comparable.
£40k for a brand new 640d (3 year warranty) versus £45k for a 2.5 year old approved used M6 GC (1 year warranty) is what it seems to boil down to! The difference in fuel is negligible with my mileage, and the difference in tax is much slimmer than it should be with this new extra £310 on any cars with a list price of £40k plus lark that I didn't know about. So really the purchase price is the only differentiator, and of course potentially extending the warranty if I keep it beyond a year.....

On your point above regarding the warranty, assuming I understand correctly, if you buy a 2.5 year old AUC you have the remainder of the manufacturers warranty plus the 1 year AUC warranty.
I owned an M6 a couple of years ago and really didn’t enjoy it. I found the DCT and loss of traction not enjoyable.
Otherwise I liked the look and tech of the car..... hence why I jumped at getting the 640d at these prices.
The 640d drives plenty fast enough for me and feels very refined.
I’m used to 5L supercharged Jaguars so am used to having 500bhp on tap. I find the 320bhp of the 640 very enjoyable.

Ah ok, I misunderstood and thought I'd just have the 1 year AUC warranty. If it's the 1 year + the 6 months remaining of the manufacturers that does actually potentially make a difference - 18 months would be a record in keeping a car for me pretty much, so it would be nice to have decent warranty throughout then get into something else. I know some aren't fussed by the warranty, but Range Rover ownership makes you change your view on these things On your point above regarding the warranty, assuming I understand correctly, if you buy a 2.5 year old AUC you have the remainder of the manufacturers warranty plus the 1 year AUC warranty.

Good points, I didn't mention in the OP I have had both before in coupe form.Otherwise I liked the look and tech of the car..... hence why I jumped at getting the 640d at these prices.

I had a 640d a few years back and loved it. I only got rid as I was getting the train to work at the time and having a 640d just for weekends made little sense so I got a Maserati GranTurismo S instead. But I really liked it - great looking car, decent tech (the Maserati felt a step back in that respect!), sounds good for a diesel, plenty quick enough - don't have a bad word to say about it.
I had an M6 coupe after that (about 18 or so months ago) but only kept it about 6 weeks. I got into it from an RS7 and didn't quite fully get to grips with it. Every time you put your foot down the power kind of drops out for a split second due to the intrusive traction control. My friend has one and hated it at first, but said with traction control off it is a totally different beast - I don't think enough of myself as a driver to have one and just constantly have traction control off haha, will leave that to the experts. Managed to sell it for a shade over what I paid for it and have had 2 x Range Rovers since.
So I can either get the 640d which is quick enough, and coming from a Range Rover (followed by a Range Sport) will feel plenty quick enough.
Or I can go for the M6 and get better at driving
