I have a tracker in my car. Its a pukka Tracker brand http://www.tracker.co.uk that the previous owner paid a "lifetime subscription" for. Unfortunately that sub did not transfer to me....lifetime meant owner, not car.

I heard a rumour, that if my car is stolen, the Police can ask Tracker to provide information on the whereabouts of my car, and they HAVE to give it, whether I have a subscription or not, as they have information on a crime.

Is this true? Can anyone confirm?

If so I will replace the tracker battery as it is kaput and causing drain to the car battery. Otherwise I will whip the tracker out and bin it.

My first thought is that you are being very optimistic if you think the police would bother speaking to tracker company at all.

Have you considered paying for the service you want them to provide?

Cobblers.

The police could, theoretically, get a court order to force them to release the information - but it's massively unlikely to happen.

Not at all, I've dealt with a number of situations like this.

The tracking company will be more than happy to co-operate once the activation fee (between £300 - £600 can't remember exactly as it varies) is paid, typically the car owner pays and can with agreement get this reimbursed by the insurance company but they're under no legal obligation to do so because the police ask (bar I imagine incredibly serious offences such as terrorism I imagine)

You'll have to pay a fortune if you want it turned on immediately. The police wont do it for you.

I've got a fairly cheap GPS tracker in my car with a £5pm Gift Gaff SIM card in it, might be an option if you don't want to pay Tracker.

Well I don't want to pay for it, but if they are going to do it anyway I will stump up for a battery (£10).

Tracker can be pursuaded to activate unpaid for systems in the right circumstances and are one of the few organisations we deal with who I find to be generally helpful

Chinese whispers maybe but I read here https://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?h=0&... that you can reactivate on theft if you call them, and it costs around £500. Thats less than a few years subscription too.

I'm leaning towards sticking a battery in it, on the off chance they will help out.

edit: aha! thanks zollar:

Interesting, on previous cars with lifetime subscription I never cancelled it or notified of new owner. Does that mean if an old car of mine is stolen that I can do the new owner a favour?

What's the point of maintaining a system you are uncertain will actually work when you need it to? Reminds me of people taking out car insurance with a host of undeclared modifications. It's insurance in theory only.

Either pay the subscription or assume it doesn't exist.

(without getting into the ROI of tracker subs)

Well it might never happen. Most likely won't.

I don't think £150/ year subs is VFM. But happy to pay one off £300-500 if it does happen and I want the car back. I assume if they can't reactivate it as its duff they won't charge me.

Thats half what my insurance excess is. Makes perfect sense to me.

You want to have your cake and eat it. It doesn't work like that I'm afraid. How do you suppose the agents that run these 24 hour things get paid, if only on the promise of a subscription renewal in the event the asset gets stolen?

Your argument is roughly the same as not buying a train ticket because you'd rather gamble on a conductor not coming round.

Not really, your train example is theft.

What do you suppose the Tracker company monitoring, or even responding to requests re: your vehicle, are?

And, because of the unlikelihood, that's an unsustainable model for the tracker company.

It's like saying "I don't want to pay for my car insurance all the time, but I'm happy to pay 2x the annual premium after I crash".

Its not really the same thing as the OP just doesn't feel it is necessary to track the car 24/7 if he already knows where it is. I can see his point.

Surely it is his choice to pay a premium in the event he needs it, rather than pay for something that he never uses?

Its like being a member if the AA, i have had a membership for ten yrs and not used them, which has cost me over a grand. I should have not bothered and just paid the premium for joining at the roadside with a broken car!

Well they certainly aren't monitoring it or responding to any requests at the moment.

Unless its stolen, then as Zollar says - I will give them a call, and it seems they will kindly locate my car and charge handsomely to do so.

Sure it is. If the company choose to offer that service. They don't.

Exactly.

Unsustainable perhaps, but similar to the AA model above. Everyone else pays through the nose to provide the service and so offshore investment funds get fat, but I don't want to do that.

Not really. The payout from a crash could be millions. Its more like saying I don't want to pay insurance, I will just pay any claims myself.

The cost for tracker to locate my car is probably about 10 mins of somebody's time.

Another crap example.

Well it seems they do. A few people have confirmed they will do it for somewhere between £300 to £600.

I'm going to ring tracker and ask them, although I expect they will be cagey about it and need a crime reference or some such.

I thought it had been established that they DO offer that service, but charge a premium for activating the tracker?

I Agree with your point about expecting the police to force the AA to help me, that's a fair analogy, but i think the conversation has moved on from that.
