Afternoon all,
Essentially after your collective opinions/experiences to help me decide what to do next..
Like many of you I contemplate what my next vehicle will be on an almost daily basis!
My current vehicle, which I've had for the last 18 months (the longest I've kept a vehicle in very long time) now owes me nothing (loan repaid etc), and I'm in two minds as to 'what to do next'.
The vehicle, as per the title, is an E92 335i. BUT, its probably one of the last being a June 2013 car, is a Manual, and has only just ticked over 21000 miles.
Its a great car, and once its been cleaned and I've taken it for a blast with that lovely exhaust note etc... I look at it and think you'd be mad to get rid.
Following a recent change in circumstances my commute will go from Circa 5 miles to 30 miles a day (still nothing great in the grand scheme of things), and I have around 20K plus the value of the E92 to swap into something new...
Sensible me is saying get rid while the value remains ok and get into anything from a late 535d to a 430d/435d Gran Coupe.
Heart says b*llox to it get an M2 (don't like the M4, looks wise or sound).
Another issue is where to pitch my car in terms of value... there's nothing really similar available on PH or AT, i.e closest are 2011/2012 cars with higher miles and AUTO... yes rose tinted glasses and all that.
And finally, and most importantly, where have people gone after a 335i and have they enjoyed/regretted it?
Should it stay or should it go?

I went 335i to E46 M3, 2 years ago, cos my high daily miles were dropping and I'd the time for some more fun at weekends on b/roads. M3 has been buddied with daily drivers that take the daily grind.Essentially after your collective opinions/experiences to help me decide what to do next..

No regrets, M3 is a more fun car. Do about 4k miles p/a mostly to exploit that. Were it my daily at high miles, then maybe I'd regret the loss of 335i which has the edge as a daily; more comfortable, better tech and flies under radar. And sometimes I do miss my 335i, to the extent that the M3's buddies are not as much fun. But I couldn't justify the two.
Really don't see why you'd go diesel for those miles. And I think if you went 440i you may miss your E92 cos the newer cars have a distinct lack of steering feel / feedback, so M cars seem obvious choice.
If you're happy with the E92 platform, consider a late , special ed, M3 ; thought you'd struggle to get a manual if that's key.
If not and it's a straight slog between 335i and M2, I'd go M2. 20k plus yours will get you into one.
If I wasn't in a rush to sell, I'd be pricing it competitively (take into it's exact color and spec) against the early 435i's hoping an enthusiast will appreciate, for not much of a sacrifice s/he can get a more fun car.
Those wanting newer tech and comfort, naturally would go F.

I do quite like the 440i but have a few issues, not 100% on the looks, totally agree with the less mechanical feel (friend has a 240i and while there's no denying it's a good bit of kit it seems to lack.. Well it feels a bit numb). I'm assuming the 440i would be similar, and finally it would be another 15 or so grand to replace like for like in some ways...
The M2 is definitely where my hearts at so perhaps just need to get my head in the same place... or just enjoy what I've got!
Again, thanks for the good reply!
I drove, albeit in 20d or similar petrol iterations, ALL F Series cars 1-5 as loaners during my 335i ownership period. Even before I had left the dealer’s car park, back in my 335i, I was smiling again thanks to having that heavier hydraulic steering back in my hands! The newer cars are too numb.
I’ve never driven a M2 but although it will have lost some steering feel, from what I’ve read it’s very involving so much more old school than an ordinary car.
I don’t daily my E46 M3 but it’s fuel cost is not massively worse than my daily (and hard driven) 335i N54 DCT to be precise.
So although you have a more efficient N55, with all the advancements I don’t see a M2 being much of a problem in fuel costs plus you’ll have a warranty at price / age you’re buying. Therefore , your head concerns (if costs were among them) can easily be addressed , surely and if you try and like : buy.
The only other alternative is, if seeking more involvement but don’t like a M2 , you could look to modify your 335i : LSD , M3 control arms or even a remap

I'm going to say keep the 335i. Same engine as the M2 and as its hydraulic steering / manual box combo is a rarity, your 335i seems like a good'un to keep and run for ever.
It will always cost to change and so save the money. Maybe consider an LSD and remap, but as its a daily maybe not.

I went from an N54 335i E92 manual to a 435i M Sport Auto after 186,000 miles. Owned from new it was a great drive but started to suffer from all the well-known issues with the N54 - turbos, waste gates, fuel injectors, fuel pump. Eventually it had to go. I agree absolutely with the comments from others about the 435i. I have done 60,000 from new and have disliked the steering and the auto box (my first) from day one. Very comfortable and more reliable thus far than the 335i (thanks to the N55 no doubt) but just not as much fun. Currently looking at an M2 manual or a 2018 Mustang as a replacement although I'm going off the Mustang idea a bit. The most annoying thing about the M2 for me is the complete lack of interior choice but if you like everything black then that is not an issue.
With an N55 335i with such a low mileage I would hang on to it and maybe spend a bit on improving it as others have suggested.

Thanks for the responses chaps, I think I'll maybe hold on to it a bit longer yet. With an N55 335i with such a low mileage I would hang on to it and maybe spend a bit on improving it as others have suggested.
LSD aside has anyone upgraded/improved other areas that they would wholeheartedly recommend?
The one area I'm on the fence over (not performance related) is the wheels. Mine currently has the MV3's on it. I love the look the MV4's but build quality even with non RFTs seems to be an issue?
I also think non OEM might ruin what is essentially a totally standard car?
Well after another few weeks of debating and in part thanks to your replies I decided to keep with what I've got...
I did actually test drive a late Manaul E92 M3, and while I did love it, I didn't love it love it..
For those brief moments when the needle went up and beyond 7K rpm it was magical, but as daily driver those occasions would be few and far between. Within a mile of getting back into mine I knew I was going to stick!
As per my last post, the wheels needed a change. And while I'm sure a few more mods will follow this year I started off by changing to a brand new set of genuine 269M Motorsport alloys.
I really like the new look and think they set the rest of the car off nicely!
