Hi all.

I've been looking at replacing my rather slow Fiesta S1600. I've been looking for a month or so and I like the look of the Golf GTI 30 edition. I found one relatively close to me but has 120,000 miles on the clock. Car looks in pretty good condition for how old it is and it's a decent price (£4,600). Is the mileage an issue? And is there any other hot hatches that anyone can recommend for 10k or under? Cheers.

How old is said Golf 30 ?
Does it have verifiable service history ?
Does it have decent tyres or cheap crap ,otherwise known as ditchfinders ?

2007, well it has full service history apparently. I don't know how verifiable it is. Haven't seen the car yet but I'll give the guy a call tomorrow and find out more. Any other suggestions on off her cars?

I do like all of them apart from the Astra, but what sways me towards the Golf is that my mate has one and I had a little go and I thought it was great. Also the interior is easily the nicest of cars of that age and of what I'm looking at. The megane is tempting though.

What would a hot hatch like those (specifically the Astra VXR) be like as a daily for a 60 mile round trip (motorway miles? Guessing it wouldn’t get more than about 35 mpg. Are servicing intervals more regular than a “warm” hatch like a 120/125i?

Standard Mk 5 Golf GTI will get 40MPG+ on a 60-65Mph Cruise controlled run. generally servicing is about the same, but I wouldn't pay attention to manufacturers guides and check out owners forums or a guide here if there is one.

The Golf may have a better interior (I actually prefer the Focus) but once you drive the Megane you won't find the Golf so great, get yourself a few test drives before you decide to buy something you may be surprised at what suits you.

That's what i was thinking. If it's something like a 2007 car, then that's around 10k miles per annum, which is fairly standard mileage.

I love the Megane 250, but only if you've got some decent roads near you or are planning a good few track days. Otherwise, it could be a bit of waste and something like an ED30 will be a fantastic middle-ground of fun and comfort. DSG is a fantastic bit of kit IMO, but you've got a manual option aswell.

Good point, the roads aren't the best around my area. Would have to be a manual for me personally. You reckon 4600 is a decent price? Of course would try and knock him down a bit.

£4600 seems pretty low for an ED30. If it's a genuinely good car in decent nick, then it's a steal.

That's what I thought. Might go and see it at the weekend if it's still an option. Any issues that I should look out for?

Is it for sale at a Hub of motors in west yorkshire? If so go in with eyes wide open as the ED30's are quite desirable but that particular one has been for sale for over a year.

is it the silver one on Autotrader?

Looks nice.

Can't see why 120k miles would be a problem as long as its been looked after.

If you buy do a full service on it for peace of mind. Oil, filters, coolant etc...

Do these need regular cambelt changes?

Standard MK5 Golf GTI issues, servicing and maintenance schedules, as far as i'm aware. It's probably worth familiarising yourself with the below:

Yeah, and yeah I would do. Going to try and go see it at the weekend. Haven't got a clue tbh.

£4.6k is about half the going price. Be very, VERY wary and do all your checks. Checked the MOT history? Absolutely get a HPI done too.

MOT history is all good, will be doing a HPI check once I've heard back from the seller.
