Hi all,
I'm not really a watch guy, so after a bit of advice. I was given a Tag Heuer 1000 (980.613 I think) in 1989 by my grandfather. I've really enjoyed it, but sadly it's recently been stolen. I'd like to replace it, but not sure if I should try and find the same thing or treat this as an opportunity to get something different.

It looks like this (not my picture).

If I were to want to find as near as possible the same thing, what's the best way of going about it, is there a decent UK forum to get amongst?

I visited a few watch dealers round Hatton Garden today, but there seems not to be much enthusiasm around vintage Tag. Are there some key dealers to talk to?

There seem to be a couple about on ebay, they're not so rare, but I've not seen any decent UK based ones yet.

I would use it as an opportunity to get something new, you can never replace sentimental value with something that is almost the same.

I occasionally spot watches on ebay that are listed just one day, I know that some dealers use automated tools to repeatedly relist the same items, keeping them at the top of ebays default search criteria. But I do wonder if some of these are stolen, up for a short time to minimise the risk of getting caught.

It may be too late, to recapture your watch. You can set up an ebay alert, so that ebay emails you every time someone posts a "TAG 1000", gents watch, in the UK for example. Once you have the alert, you can browse the item even after the listing has finished.

Also check Etsy and Gumtree. Take a Saturday out and visit pawnbrokers (cashconverters etc.) in a 30 mile radius from your home.

It's your decision whether you pay the ransom to recover your (insurance company's) property before you report the item to the Police.
