Its a massive con. I live in Surrey, not London, but still fall into the ULEZ. Fortunately my 23 year old Celica GT-Four is exempt, I think its generally the diesels they are after.

Also in other news as London pushes for much cleaner air in London with the ULEZ under the guise of hitting clean air targets, the government accepts proposals from Heathrow to allow another 700 planes to fly over the SAME PLACE the ULEZ will be put into in 2021. That will affect 2m+ people with extra noise and fuel pollution as well as meaning much more transport such as lorries/taxies servicing Heathrow bringing more pollution.

Hypocrites of the highest order. But the common factor in both decisions, is that they make more money...

The air quality in London is killing people what would you expect Kahn to do about it, build another bridge over the Thames?

My daughter lives just within the South Circular there in S.E London, they don't own a car and indeed you don't need to, because Londoners must have one of [if not thee] best public transport system in the world.

If you don't incur the costs of personal car ownership, you can afford to hire one for those weekend excurions to the New Forest etc.

theoretical projections, not seen any actual proof of a single death caused by it, the air in london is 100 times better than it was 20 years ago

regardless it is time we started to move into clean renewable energy powered cars and taxing the worst offenders is the right way to start

I have just moved to a place metres into the new expanded ULEZ.

To fund the move from the country and as it would not be practical in London traffic, I sold my compliant 2016 Mustang V8 and kept my 1998 very reliable BMW e36.

Due to funny working hours I need my car as public transport is not reliable 24 hours a day even if available.

So thanks to this I have to sell my reliable looked after for 20 years workhorse for pennies and risk hundreds at least on a post 2006 car that I have no idea if it will land me massive bills.

Oh and more expensive insurance.

A mate has just discovered that his 2008 motorbike that he commutes into London on all year round is not compliant. So he's faced with quite a big expense in order to stay lawful come next year.

I never drive into the central zone but I, along with millions of others live and work in the new expanded zone.

Air pollution undoubtedly kills people. Credible sources say 9,500 or 40,000

https://unearthed.greenpeace.org/2017/03/06/air-po...

This is a lot more than, for example, moped gangs.

The Mayor has put legislation in place to reduce these deaths. Some say that a politician's primary function is to keep people safe.

This will inconvenience some people.

That is the point of a lot of legislation - you inconvenience people so that they behave differently.

I imagine the clean air acts of the 50's met similar responses as in "what are these idiots up to? Now I won't be able to power my inner London factory with coal". But we seem to have survived.

I do think it would be a good idea to have some form of limited exemption for enthusiasts though. Would be frustrating to pay an extra £12 every time I wanted to go for a Sunday afternoon drive in a classic.

Khan has very naive advisors me thinks, sure he has to do SOMETHING but anyone with a brain can see through this, he is shying away from the real Polluters as in Buses and Taxis. He is going to find himself easily displaced on his arse come next election time.

I'm enjoying watching him fail, schadenfreude I know but deeply satisfying nonetheless.

Have you seen the pea soup fog. It's not a valid comparison tbh.

Oh and I hope your not connected to law in any way as that really isn't what law is about at all lol.

Yepp even Labour believe in taxing the poor and not the rich. Good system isn't it.

No I'm not connected to law, but I not sure I get your point. Maybe "a lot" was misused and I should have said "quite a lot" or "some". Politicians absolutely use inconvenience to encourage us to do what they think we should. Usually making things more expensive. They want people to smoke less, or less people to smoke, so they make it inconvenient - they make it more expensive, through taxes, and they reduce the places you are allowed to do it. They want you to drink fewer sugary drinks so they make it more expensive. They want you to drive more economic cars so they tax ones with big engines.

I haven't seen a pea souper, personally, though I have studied them and feel it is valid. Just because you can't see it doesn't mean it doesn't kill you. Pea soupers killed lots of people in short bursts of time. Modern air pollution is less obvious but still kills.

Just because a truth is inconvenient doesn't mean we should ignore it.

Meanwhile let’s go ahead and build another runway and increase jet fuel pollution.

So why are the government supporting an increase in air pollution via Heathrow?
Why have they not enforced EV policy to all public transport including Taxis?

The plan is so poorly thought through its almost laughable - the repercussions as usual are not analysed in any shape or form. For instance it now means that to drive to one of the largest recycling centres near me you have to drive 100 yards into the ULEZ, so to responsibly recycle large quantities of materials costs £12.50. I would imagine the instances of fly-tipping are going to multiple hundreds of times in the area. Other things like cemeteries etc. all sit just inside the ULEZ along the border.

I get there needs to be a line drawn, but it really takes an order of the highest level of stupidity to think 'oh lets pick two roads and go with that and don't worry about local services being affected' is denseness of the highest order - as Malcolm Tucker once said 'he is so dense light bends around him'

Again, will give you a clue...money in coffers is the driver here, not meeting clean air targets, it really has nothing to do with it.

It doesn't really have much to do with air cleanliness - My M5 (2003) and z3 (2001) both have to pay...
my 1994 RRC which does c. 10-15mpg is exempt...

I have to drive into London 6-12 times a year - guess which car I will be taking?!

if it was just about air cleanliness, then a different balance would have been set...

you don't live in London do you?

The loser cruisers and the peasant wagons are dangerous , hateful , expensive and not fit for purpose in any way whatsoever

I live just outside of the South Circular - and I ABOLUTELY need a car and bike. Unless I should walk home after midnight? the 12 miles?

I can save 2 hours a day on my bike and it's half the cost of the train to own, tax, insure , fuel..........

tell me again why I don't need a vehicle?

Mad, innit? I'm all for getting pollution out of the city but there must be carrot to go with Sadiq's stick. Will he invest in an ever better tube and rail service? I doubt it...
Well Khan is a total inept wker - as is well documented.

Personally I think i'd be say, binning off the 40000 Uber idiots that clog up the London roads, attack women, do dangerous Uturns consistently - rather than say, motorbikes, that don't congest, and emit much of this taxable pollution that is so trendy these days

That would be too hard though - motorbikes are on the DLVA database so despite making up less than 1% (I think I saw the pie last week) they're going to be taxed and then all the stink pot buses and cabs are not.............

random.

Already we see the other cities following suit, Cambridge has long since been anti car, so much so that I would refuse work within the city when I ran my wedding car hire, just not worth the aggravation.

Government 'Buy Diesels, it's the future'

The Public 'OK'

Government 'Might have a bit of an issue here - why have you all bought Diesels, nasty pollution creating car'

The Public 'because you told us too ??'

Government 'Never mind that, we don't want them anymore, so you will have to pay more to use them and suffer the loss in value'

The Public 'OK'

Sadly we will all get hit again, those that can afford to run newer cars won't get hit as much, I do find it strange that a lot of the City's talking about congestion charge zones have large Ports / Airports, could it be that there is more pollution because of the large cruise / container ships and Planes in these areas (plus all the HGV traffic to service them) it doesn't matter though, just tax the people at the bottom of the chain.

I'm all for protecting the environment but it has to be done in a sustainable way that applies the costs evenly

Madness including bikes, bike engines generally get up to operating temperature quickly. How many "ultra low emissions compliant" car engines stay in the warm-up cycle for most of the journey, particularly winter?
