I’ve owned my E92 320d for nearly a year. With 75k miles on the clock it’s never skipped a beat.
Today I got the error message “transmission fault” and a picture of a yellow cog. It felt like the auto box was stuck in 4th or 5th gear.
I pulled over, switched off and re started. Car drove normally and the warning had gone.
Can anyone offer any advice. Should I be worried. Anyone had anything similar???
Thanks in advance.

Is your battery in good shape? Could be a voltage issue to the sensor? (Not seen it on a bmw but my other car likes to report all manner of faults when the battery is dying)

Plug in an OBD reader to see fault codes.

Read codes,go from there.

If you can find someone with inpa or some other diagnostic software, there should be a stored fault code to see what the issue is/was.

What year is it? Definitely worth getting it checked, and not with a generic obd reader as these normally wont read gearbox ecu faults.

You may have one of the common leaks on that gearbox and your fluid level has just dropped below a level to be causing some issues

Thanks for the thoughts.
It’s a late 2012 model.
I did wonder if I’d fully engaged drive properly.
I’d stopped at some lights and put it into N for a couple of seconds. The lights changed much quicker than I expected and I (think) I snatched at D maybe not properly engaging the gear stick.
I was unable to change via the paddles or the stick. I think it showed it as being in 5th gear.
I’ll take it out again today but having switched off and re started. All is as it was.

I have an elderly Range Rover that gives a 'transmission fault' warning about once a fortnight. It goes away if re-started and runs as sweetly as it ever did 130,000 miles ago. I assume my ECU is tired of life. smile

This is not to say you should ignore your fault, but simply to say they can be erroneous.
