What happened? When did it all change?

It seems perfectly acceptable to some people these days in public places to

  • Watch netflix / youtube / TV on their mobile phones on speakerphone
  • Have phone calls with people on speakerphone
  • Take and make prolonged phone calls whilst dining in restaurants
  • Not use any sort of "indoor voice" when talking in public places such as restaurants, trains etc.
  • Allow your kids to run rampant noisily
I travel a lot with my job and theres no getting away from them - typically all of the above happen

  • on trams
  • on trains
  • on flights
  • in quiet zone areas
  • in restaurants
Is it no longer common decency to

  • take / make calls outside of a restaurant?
  • only make / take brief calls on trains and confined spaces?
  • talk in "indoor voices" (cant think of a better phrase) in confined public places (trains, restaurants, etc)?
  • use headphones?
  • exercise some modicum of control over your children?
  • sit to one side / away from couples / other people in a restaurant with small children so you disturb as few people as possible?

Unfortunately we live in a world where people think 'what's right for me, is right for everyone else'.

I COMPLETELY AGREE WITH YOU. WHEN I WAS YOUNG PEOPLE HAD MANNERS. I CANT REMEMBER MY FATHER TALKING ON HIS PHONE WHILE SHOPPING. CERTAINLY MY GRANDFATHER DINT.
people really just think about themselves nowadays unfortunately.
regarding the kids.. ive got 2 of my own and sometimes you just have to let them be kids. i do my best to keep their behavior under control but sometimes they are just being.... kids.

Kids be kids. 99% of the time the people complaining about kids are the ones without kids, and then they have kids, and they get it.

I have kids. Well a kid.

I know full well kids can (and should) be kids but likewise a lot of parents these days seem to take no ownership or control over their kids when they're out.

I dont want this to become a "having a go at kids" thread because thats not my aim. Its generally adults who show no consideration at all for others.

hehe

I've no issues with people out shopping and being on phones. They're past you in a minute. Its when its a confined space - bus, train, tram, restaurant, etc where they've a captive audience that i have an issue with. No one steps outside any more (tricky on a train, tram or plane, granted wink ) or says "i'm on the train, i'll call you back", nope, lets have a full on loud conversation about me and my life and drone on and on.

Just boarding a flight in America a couple of weeks ago and the woman sat next to me decided to have a loud Facetime conversation with her daughter just before we left. Whole plane could hear her and the video was in full view of myself and anybody else behind.

Why?

As my mum would say, "showing off"

I also believe there is a fair degree of "look at me!“ behaviour involved in this. Probably coincides with the" give me attention/validation!" psychology of the social media age.

PS: I hope someone reads this and gives me a massive thumbs up.

We've had two kids (now grown up) but never had noise issues with them, as they were given a decent upbringing, and taught how to behave, especially when out or when visitors were present.

clap What a fine thing to say, I agree. People watching videos with no headphones on commuter trains (always on the way home in the afternoon, for some reason) seem to think everyone is going to think "Isn't that person so gregarious and with such marvellous taste".

I think it's because all old people are deaf, so we youngsters don't think they can hear anything we do.

I only say this because everyone over 50 doesn't seem to hear it when I say 'please', 'excuse me' or 'FFS why are you doing 45 in a 60'.

Yes, you're right its not really a "shocker" (and i never said otherwise, just an observastion) - just disappointing it seems to be growing as a trend.
