i think that Cool-it will retrofit a/c for most porsches. they are in dorset.
www.coolit-ac.co.uk
they advertise in the classifieds of Porsche Post, the PCGB magazine, which perhaps also goes some way to answering your first question
if you are retrofitting aircon to a 924 you may well find that the total cost is 25-50% of the puchase price of your car however
why not buy a 944 cab instead??

On this point having just sold the Alfa, I'm in the market for either a 944 or 924. Which club do people recommend the PCGB or TIPEC?
Also anyone any idea whether Air con can be retrofitted as Porkers with it seem to be as common as rocking horse poo....

This might want to be added to: and those which have it may not actually be working..
Some were removed for the extra BHP it gives (2 IIRC), or for weight reasons. A whole bunch of them faded(mine included) with the CFC ban, as they need rethingying for the modern gases, other wise the gas just seeps out(note complete lack of technical expertise here)
In my case, its on the long term to do list

I prefer PCGB because I'm biased and am in it
( I help run the 944 Register). However I've been to a few Tipec events and meetings and they are very good. I can't be a member of both though (wife would take away my anorak)
Cool-it quoted a 944 owner I know about £2k to do a complete install
so look for a car with it if you really need it. You do not have to have an old system expensively retrofitted to use modern R134a gas because there are now fully R12 compatible gases that work in the old system with no leaks, are legal and safe.
I use www.airconone.co.uk to maintain my aircon and he will service, drain, vacuum flush and refill my 'old' system for approx £70 every two years
