My new car is arriving in 6 months so need something inbetween and figured an M4 would be good value, in order to lose the least amount and be able to move it quickly im just wondering in the M4 world whats the better options that would allow for a quicker sale

1) Manual or DCT?
2) Any colours to avoid? Or Colours to get
3) Any options that are essentials
4) Coupe or convertible more desirable?

Help appreciated I know nish. My personal preference would be a pastel blue manual coupe

Most want a DCT so more customers, but more competition too. If I was buying one it would have to be a manual box and there are others like me, so a captive audience as it were.

Not sure on value of these and how options affect it, save that the Harmon Kardon or better sound system would make quite a difference to many.

In any event these will shed value quite quickly initially, so I budget for that.

I think if the value loss is so important that fine spec details matter, then I’d avoid an M4 generally.

id expect to lose a fair few k, in terms of loss do you mean M4 vs M3 or just broader in the sense of buying a 3/4 year old BMW?

If you're worried about losing money, keep your current car for another six months – nobody buys an M4 for reasons of financial prudence.

(I didn't reply earlier as I had assumed the post was a joke or tongue in cheek.)

I'd get a good amount of options, but would be more worried about the mileage. Less than 10,000 miles and BMW will sell it as a nearly new car if its done that much in 6 months of its age. I know someone who lost £25k from selling a Tesla model X after only 3 months, and that was due to the mileage, so its important to keep the miles low if you plan to sell.

On top of that, options should be the extended leather, heated seats, adaptive drive and DCT. These cars are well equipped from factory anyway. Avoid the driver protection systems, they aren't worth as much in resale value, people look more for luxury items e.g. upgraded leather, heated seats, memory seats, comfort access. Heads up display is nice too. Don't go all out on options however, you are selling in 6 months time.

It depends on what car you are getting in 6 months.

With me I would either keep my car for 6 months more, or I would buy something that has done most of its depreciation and have fun with (something you want to experience without owning long term)

If you are determined to still own a M4 for 6 months, I would suggest a competition version with the heads up display, you will be extremely lucky to find one with carbon brakes.

Carbon dash trim is also a must (tbh never seen one without it though)

If you can find one with extended leather fantastic, also surround view is useful for parking in tight spots.

Also the active security pack I think is a must as it has systems that help protect you in a crash (no idea why that’s not standard)

Also the reversing camera is very useful.

Also Harman Kardon speakers is well worth the money

Also Speed limit display is fantastic and I think is a must own regardless of engine size.

Gearbox wise the manual are rare, but hard to sell on (seen M4 competition manuals for sale for months).

Colour wise I don’t there are any no go colours.

Also the Coupes I believe are more desirable than the cabrios thanks to the carbon roof and better looks.

Unless you buy the oldest, cheapest and most high mileage one you can find that isn't ropey. One that has already done the bulk of the depreciation on other words. Buy privately, sell privately, you might get most of your money back.

But a good V8 M3 and you might make money.

If you’re looking for a fun car that you won’t loose much money on I would find a 1M coupe. Pretty safe money for 6 months.
