Le Mans - Speed Cameras
Discussion
France has woken up to 'how much money we can make from speeding' to such an extent that the locals actually drive around withing the limits!!!
Although there has been a lot of protest about the forthcoming drop in national speed limit from 90kph to 80kph.
I would be very surprised if they miss the opportunity to relieve you of copious quantities of Euros.....
Also some of the 'speed enforcement' is sub-contracted to private firms!!!
During my recent week in Normandy (on the bike) we religeously stuck to the limit!!

Flashed twice (at least) over LM weekend. When do I expect to get the letter?
Can’t remember the speed limit but whatever it was I have no doubt I would have been well over it !
Have things changed, certainly upto last year there was no facility for the French authorities to enforce speeding fines or points obtained from fixed cameras for UK vehicles. If they catch you there and then, there are on-the-spot fines, but not by fixed camera. Can’t remember the speed limit but whatever it was I have no doubt I would have been well over it !
You'll likely get a letter (french letter...!) in about 3-4 weeks by the time the DVLA have passed your details back. We're getting about 10-15 a week at the moment for our fleet and sending back the standard reply (in English) that the vehicle is on a lease and providing the user details for the foreign authority to follow up.
We're not getting any rejections, as some have suggested the owner is liable for the fines, rather than the driver.
One thing I have not been able to establish for certain is how these are enforced. It's all very well getting the keeper details from the DVLA, but if the keeper or driver simply refuses to co-operate, what can the foreign authorities do? I guess they can issue proceedings in France, a judgement is made, but then are they likely to enforce that here in the UK?

How does this sit with GDPR? Handing off personal information to a third party? Or is it not relevant in this scenario? S11Steve said:

Are the vehicles actually leased? Or is there the ‘facility’ to give some random name and address back to them and give a cheery two fingered wave? We're not getting any rejections, as some have suggested the owner is liable for the fines, rather than the driver.

They are, and all to corporate customers. We don't have driver details either, but none of the issuing authorities come back to us requesting more details or insisting we have to pay. I've no experience of how it works with private individuals in their own vehicle though. Anecdotally vehicles get stopped at ports, but given how many of our fleet cross the channel, the only seizures we have ever been notified of relate to contraband or immigrants, never unpaid fines.

I heard as the French secretly hate the British they hide never Calais with speed guns and target British cars.
I expect they can pursue us but, we can't them.
Not my experience, during Le Mans week I had locals waving and all sorts when the gendarmerie were on duty, jolly good eggs imho I expect they can pursue us but, we can't them.

I went a few years back and was told to stick within the speed limit as plod over there had got wise to silly UK peeps flexing their small dicks.
Amazingly I stuck to their speed limit as I didn't feel the need to show off how fast my car can go.
I even took in some of the scenery.
You’re making assumptions that there’s no ferry to catch.Amazingly I stuck to their speed limit as I didn't feel the need to show off how fast my car can go.

The fact he thinks exceeding speed limits is done in order to show off is indicative of his prejudice anyway. Nevermind the fact it gets you to your destination quicker and is more entertaining, or less boring, in the process.

Unless you enjoy sitting at 6k rpm with your ears bleeding.
Whereas many of the GTs, supercars uber-barges are lovely places to cruise at speed. So it may be a misunderstanding of how the other drivers are not suffering to attain these speeds.
