Hello
Would be interested to hear any current/former drivers out there with this engine and what your thoughts/feedback are with it. Running costs, performance, economy etc etc.
Fully aware are of the 4.0D engine, hence why I’m writing this post. I am looking at buying one or the other.
Thank you kindly.

Engine wise it is the N57. It does share some of the timing setup with the much hated N47. However it does appear to cause less issues than the N47, usually down to the design of the TC system not being 100% the same as on the N47. Additionally the extra smoothness appears to help. I would check for any rattling or knurring when revved and held at 2k rpm or even at idle it will be from the rear of the engine.
Additionally check for any heavy thumping noises as there has been a few cars that have had issues with the bottom end more so on 35D/40D twin turbo engines like this (unless you were talking about the 30D,35D and 40D (the only difference being the turbo setup, the base engine is virtually identical).
Economy well I get 35-36 MPG in regular day to day driving in the Summer, it drops to 32/33 in Winter. Take a few MPG off for it being an X5.
The ZF box is what brings it all together though and ensures that it makes good progress.

A work colleague has one and seems to get low to mid 30's in terms of MPG.
It certainly does move for a big beast and he has commented it is almost as fast as the 130i he had previously. He has owned it 12 months and had no major issues so far however I am sure they do have the potential to cause some scary bills.

I owned a 30D a few years back. Superb engine and gearbox. The 30D was quick enough so the 40D must be great.
The best I got from a tank was 35mpg but I generally got 26mpg from town driving and 32mpg from motorways.
Only downside for me was the ride. My 30D was SE spec suspension which I found too stiff and I got fed up with it because of that. The M-Sport has stiffer suspension.
