Bit of a story with this one, about 3yrs ago a friend needed a new car, he was looking at Fabia VRS' and the like, something cheap and cheerful thats still fun to drive. I convinced him to go and look at a Glanza advertised on PH. He bought the car there and then as it was a decent enough example and had a few tasty mods already done.
Fast forward 3yrs, through word of mouth I heard that he was thinking of selling it. I had the money there so thought sod it, I'll do a buy. At this point I hadn't seen the car in about 2yrs as we both took different routes in life. The car turned up, and sweet Jesus it was rough now, hadn't been washed in 2yrs, fog lights smashed, the Bride bucket seat was tatty, lights were so yellow that they were opaque. Bonnet creased by someone leaning on it or closing it incorrectly. And the worse part, 4th gear syncro has gone, clutch release bearing has gone and it whines a little so needs bearings too.

Spec list that I've worked out so far:
98' spec glanza
Engine:
Front mounted intercooler
Short route intercooler pipework
Re-routed air filter to behind the front grill
HKS adjustable actuator
Zisco exhaust manifold
Zisco screamer pipe
Decat
BOV/recirc blanked
Full Japspeed exhaust with 4.5inch tail
Blitz turbo timer
Suspension:
New shocks
Tein springs
Whiteline rear ARB
New OEM brake set up throughout
Drive train:
Uprated clutch
OEM LSD
Interior:
Standard starlet seats
Bride bucket drivers seat
OMP wheel and boss
Blitz boost gauge
Exterior:
Optional front lip?
Unidentified wheels
Its a fairly well specced car, had some money spent on it for sure.
First things first

Turbo timer ripped out, can't stand the things. And this one has a major drawback. You can start the car with no keys!
As you can see the Bride seat is quite old but I'd like to try to save it.
This brings it up to date, i had to rush back to Birmingham and leave the car on my dad's front garden for a week straight after buying it. Gonna write a to do list to get it back to its former glory. Long term plans, i have a td05 20g billet wheel turbo here, so that'll be going on this. I'm into ecu programming so a ME221 standalone is getting ordered soon and will see how much the little CT9 turbo can take

Love these little things, scarily fast and light. I remember being in my mates jap import and taking it off the clock (on a private road of course) only car that ever made me think twice about speeding.

Not many good ones left sadly so good to see a project happening.

Neil.

Progress will be slower than wanted as I'm still a poor student lol, would like to get it at least presentable bodywork wise over my summer holidays and perhaps strip the gearbox down

I've a soft spot for these as I used to have a 95 Starlet GT. The Glanza was always a good looking car though I thought, I see a couple about these days too, but never an older Starlet.
How is the insurance on it for a (presumably young) student? I always got cheap insurance on them compared to their peers. a td04 can get 200bhp fairly easily too which will help with its pocket rocket reputation smile

Its not too bad on insurance tbh, ~£1300 as no no claims etc and ive just turned 21, with a yrs no claims that'll come down to £600 with all mods declared. I was gonna go td04, but go hard or go home lol, should be 350-370bhp with the td05 20g billet I think. Found some rust on the boot floor tho, so will need to sort that out beforehand

Nice, always liked these but couldn't quite resolve myself with the rev limiter bashing yoof image they seem to attract here.

A lot of car for the money and they seem to tune very well.

I am finally back from Uni for the summer, means i can crack on with this. Most logical first thing is to give the car a proper clean, got carried away in the lovely weather and didn't take any progress pics, but safe to say I'm shocked....
Firstly though, wasn't a fan of how the bumper was bent to fit the intercooler. Sod it, hacksaw came out in the end and made a "slight" cut.

Looks miles better in my opinion, people will definitely know it's turbocharged now laugh lights were also given a light over over with some G3 cutting compound.
First, sprayed the car in Citrus pre cleaner, let that dwell for a few moments. Snow foam, rinse, iron remover, rinsed, hand washed with 2 bucket method, dried using a super soft microfiber.
Wheels were given a thorough clean and decontamination, they're either not that old or have been recently refurbed
Then clayed the entire car, then rinsed off for the last time. The state of the claybar at the end was surprising, given that I just washed it, it was filthy! At this point G3 was just too aggressive as the paint was actually decent. So Super fine 3M was used on a Machine polisher

For the first time in a while, there is a reflection to it! New Glanza decals were also added all round.

Not to everyones taste, put a large 6Two1 sticker on the rear screen, I'm a youngster and like stickers laugh attempted to the clean the exhaust, but its incredibly sooty the car could be a diesal lol.
Comical sticker added to the dashboard

Did stick my JDM broadway mirror in and changed the gear knob but not much point in those pictures.

Hovered the Bride seat, but didn't make of a difference, will have to get some proper shampoo and wet vac it to get rid if the engrained dirt

Meeting its much bigger brother, kicked dads evo out the garage for a night laugh
Tomorrow will hit the car with a finer polish, sort out the rather dodgey boost control system, attack the engine bay with the jet wash as its just filthy. And potentially re-fit the better exhaust manifold

Change of plan with this. Was going to take my time and gradually get it roadworthy again to a high standard. But like a plonker I've put my name down for a local-ish show on the August bank holiday weekend (3 weeks away!!!) So the list of stuff to do:
Paint:
Front bumper
Bonnet
1 door blending into the wing and quarter panel
Mechanicals:
Turbo off for new manifold
Mesh turbo inlet (going to run no filter RIP laugh)
New screamer pipe to go on
Re-allign the exhaust
New front discs/pads (need to order!)
Oil, filter and plugs change (ordered)
Drop the sump
Bride bucket seat sent to the re-trimmers (done today)

Lots of stuff to do in a few weeks, the gearbox can stay crunching in 4th for the moment lol. Wish me luck, got a lot to do in the coming weeks as well as a uni assignment re-submission!

You’re not still planning on sticking a TD05 20G on this are you?

Surely it’d be a case of.......wait.......wait.....wait....5000rpm... aaaaarrgghhh WTF.... gearbox shreds and the engine spits every rod through the block. No?

Would the 1.3 even have enough puff to spool it up in the first place?

Imprezas of that age cannot take a 20G on the standard gearbox or engine internals for long at all, so how on earth would this manage it?

Yep 20g is going on still. It's billet wheel so extremely light using an evo turbo so slightly different to the Scooby one. On a 2.0 it'll spool at 3800, so before 5k I'd imagine on the 1.3. Doing a few things like shortest route boost pipes to help it and 2 external wastegates with screamer pipes. Engines being forged so the rods can take that power quite easy, it's still only 90bhp per rod, nothing for a well built 4 cylinder really. Bit of headwork, valve springs and retainers will help increase the revs safely to 8250rpm so still a reasonable power band for a 400bhp/ton car I think

I ran one of Andy Forrest’s 18gs on my scoob wagon and it was cracking on a 2.0, one of my friends ran a modified td04 on his EP82 and it was laggy but fun on boost - well when it stopped spinning the wheels up in third, sounded like a jet fighter with the external waste gate biggrin He had loads of head work done and proper uprated valve gear too. You will ruin the drivability and character of the car with a 20g.

I’ll try and get a bit more info and post it for you smile

With clever mapping and engineering it won't be too laggy, if it ends up being laggier than optimal then I'll swap it for a td04 with a bigger wheel. But around 4700rpm full boost is what I'm aiming for, that still leaves almost a 4k power band which is very good for any car. The astra vxr will get max boost at 2k but is dead By 5.5, that's a 3.5k power band to put into perspective. It'll only be like vtec at the end of the day, having to work for it a bit more. Wheelspin will be managed by boost by gear, as I'm mapping it myself I can take longer to make tiny adjustments to make the most of it.
If you could possibly get some info on engine spec? Still have no idea what internals to go with, but i do have a suspicion this engine is already forged.....

Td05 may be bigger than i thought laugh
Took the std CT9 turbo off last night. Absolute fker of a job every bolt was seized or snapping finally got it off though, just for a laugh put the td05 up next to it......
Just a bit bigger, what's funny is the td05 is still what I'd class as a small turbo.
Luckily dad manages an engineering firm, CT9 turbo loaded into the boot of the trusty steed mk5 Astra. Using Mr Muscle came up quite well
Now I'm waiting for the trimmer to get back to me on prices of Alacantra for the drivers seat. Gaskets all ordered as there were none on the turbo setup at all, probably why it was blowing like a bh, that and it had a dirty great crack all the way round on the manifold!!!! Should be running by next weekend so we can do a few runs in it, make sure its boosting right etc before the show on the 5th August

Loved these things, I was thinking of getting one when I was about 19, ended up getting a Swift GTI; another car that you don't see many of these days.

Keep up the good work!

Will do...on hols at present so will take a few days smile

In the meantime here are a few shots of another mate's Glanza, sadly written off by a drunk driver. We never worked out the true spec but it was fully forged and bloody quick frown

Would you happen to know about the boost control systems on these. I'll get a pic at some point of mine, i know the hi/lo boost solenoid has been bypassed as there's a loop of pipe on a solenoid and the hks actuator only has one port. Can i now just totally remove all of that solenoid and associated wiring? Or will the ecu throw a hissy fit? Looks very untidy and I can't spot it on the red ones engine bay
