Hello, could someone advise me about NI contributions please. I'm trying to work out the take-home salary of a part-time job which will be supplementing my self-employed income.

The pay for the part time job is £15k/PA. I will be paying income tax on all of this as I earn more than my tax-free allowance via self-employment.

What I don't understand is whether because of my self-employed earnings I'll be paying 12% NI on all of the part-time employed income, or whether I will still be able to earn £162/week before paying the 12%.

I tried to ask the Inland Revenue but after 12 minutes on the phone waiting I gave up.

For NI the "employed" part will be charged in the normal way and then any "self-employed" contributions will be payable as well, so I think you'll be on the hook for that 12%.

Avoidance of NI remains one of the attractions of trading through a limited company and paying yourself with dividends.

Thanks for your help

I don't mind the 12%, my question is whether because of my other income whether I'd have to pay 12% on ALL of my employed income or whether it only applies after the £162/week threshold.

NI is employer specific so you will benefit from the nil rate NI allowance on the part time earnings.
