I’m 20 in July and had a licence 2 1/2 years.

Max to spend is £7000 (incl insurance) and looking for a new car.

Just bought a DS3 but that broke within 18 days of ownership so looking for something more reliable.

Looking for something relatively fast. Have already driven a swift sport before everyone suggests that and it’s just not for me. Looking for something a bit faster.

What does anyone suggest?

At the moment all I have on my list is a Seat Ibiza Cupra.....

Fiesta 1.0 Ecoboost

99bhp or 123bhp version around 6K-7k, good luck with insurance on anything at your age!

The seat is the one. I have been looking at one to replace our C1 soon, depends entirely on insurance however.

They are only DSG as far as I know, believe they are good engines too. Quite fast at 6.5s to 60, they are claimed as 7s from factory but have been proved to be faster by independent testers.

They do seem to be good on equipment level being that they are Cupras. Insurance isn't too bad on them either.

Mini Cooper S is a good car too but engine could be too big or they could be too much to insure. Premium products however and have many options and features similar to a 3 series (share components between these cars as well).

At 20 with 2 1/2 years experience? Insurance shouldn't be too bad. At that age I had a VW Passat!

I quite like the idea of a DSG. Insurance is about £600 so not the worst, compared to about £2000 for a Type R/GTI. Didn’t realise they are that much quicker than claimed. That’s an added bonus.

Sadly there aren’t really any for under 7K that aren’t Cat C/D or have about 80,000 Miles.

Look up some quotes for unusual car for a young guy. At 20 I had an E39 530d estate (needed the space). It was quicker than my friends cars and very cheap to insure in retrospect.

I would avoid the Ibiza Cupra which has the 1.4 TFSI engine as well as any VAG group cars with that engine, they have a bad reputation.

Why’s that so? Is it the same for the 150bhp FR?

They have an oil consumption issue, it should be all over google. It depends on the what year it is, I think the later ones had revised engines.

If it’s A case of keeping it topped up with oil because it drinks it, that’s no problem for me.

Have had a look on google and it says that they drink oil but if you keep it topped up, shouldn’t have any problems.

Extremely common case with VAG group engines. The TSI engines are all direct injected and those engines are common for consuming some oil. It is bearable and normal, there are many other manufacturers with engines that consume oil. Your insurance is very cheap, I'd go for the ibiza cupra.

Thanks for all those options mate! Hugely appreciated. Have to exclude the Megane 2.0T and Leon FR because the insurance is ridiculous on them. Will need to get a test drive in the others for sure.

What are you talking about? I just ran a quick search on Autotrader, Ford Fiesta, under 50k miles, less than £7k, 1 litre, ecoboost keyword, exclude cat S/N/D etc.. 12 pages of results!

Respectfully OP, i wouldn't take this advice and i'd avoid the Ibiza Cupra. It goes way beyond using a bit of oil and the engines can and will lunch themselves. It's not true anyway and not ALL VAG engines do this, it's just mainly the twin-charged 1.4 TSI engine (turbocharged and supercharged). I think they did end up sorting the issues for the later cars in around 2011 i think, but your budget won't get you the uprated version. It was then replaced by the 1.8 TSI, which suffered none of these issues at all.

The 2.0 TSI engine is the best VAG unit to go for, for performance, economy and reliability. The insurance may be an issue on those though. Whatever you do, don't get a car with an engine that has a track record of being an unreliable nightmare, that could cost you thousands to fix or replace, just because it's cheap on insurance. You'd be better off going for the 2.0 and taking the extra hike on insurance with this mindset, as it'd likely be a cheaper proposition!
