Good evening,

I am looking for a sub £10k estate that has something about it.

Must be 5 cylinders or more, petrol and RWD / AWD. Also looking for some space so V70, 5 series, A6, Superb size.

I am keeping an eye out for all the usual suspects such as V70 T6, Superb 3.6, R36, E500, Legacy 3.0 etc.

This has cropped up and I like the V8 and manual box combo.

I know there is the issue of the oil pipe in the V but are there any other issues.

Any general thoughts?

That is a seriously rare thing, a v8 manual touring. Bargain I'd say!

That's a rare one have a good listen to the timing chain & keep an eye on the valve stem seals as it's a weak point but that's worth a look.

Has to be worth a punt on rarity alone..

Would easily sell on to another enthusiast.

I’ve been to see it and it’s a nice car. I was ready to make an offer but then I saw what I thought was smoke in the rear view mirror.

We parked up and revved it and there was white/blue smoke coming from the left of the twin exhaust pipes. This cleared but returned after a brief period of idling. Valve stem seals?

The seller is a genuine chap, I don’t believe he was aware of a problem.

A nice car but would have to be considerably cheaper for me to buy.

Thanks very much for putting that.

It makes it need to be considerably cheaper to factor in the valve stems. However, when they are done you should have a reliable motor.

Was it good other than that?

It was pretty good. There was damage to the rear bumper as if it had reversed over something. A bulge in a front tyre which was a shame. The ride was firmer than I thought it would be. The front grille had overspray on it. There is a dent/scuff on the door from an inconsiderate plonker and a few chips etc.

I didn’t test all of the electrics but the air con and sunroof were both working. I didn’t spend much time poking around as I was saving that for after the drive.

My previous car was a manual e34 540i Touring and this felt completely different, so much more refined and lighter controls. Not much v8 sound. It was in pretty much the condition that you’d expect.

So a new tyre, a bit of paint and dent removal is going to be around £500 - I don’t need perfection but safety and a little attention are good to have!

The valve stems are the common issue and I have no idea what the cost is to crack open the heads and change the guides over.

You would also need a slightly more fruity exhaust to free up some V8 noise!

I would think that a purchase price of £1800 - 2000 is all that could be offered if the above (minus exhaust) was needed.

Yes that seems like valve stem seals.
