I've made a pair of one off splitters but I'm not sure about a couple of details. Do you think the gap between them is too big, and do you think the angle where they meet the clam at the front should be squarer? I really can't decide.

Martin,

They look about right in positioning but how thick are they?

Drop me a mail and we'll talk aerodynamics

Best Regards
Matt

They're about 7mm.

IMHO they should be more squared off on the inside and they should end where the radiator opening starts.

Ah, then they're 1mm thicker than the race spec splitter which is exactly 6mm.

They're made from MDF, so they're easy to make and cheap to replace in neccessary. It was dearer for the black spray paint than the MDF.

Come on guys...give me some feedback!

Like or No Like?

Smaller space in the middle or no?

Squarer or no?

Martin.

Gap fine, angles fine but...

Stick out too far for me and way too thick to actually work well as aero devices.

Nicely finished though

Nice job Prof. Jenkins...

MDF - when they get chipped by flying debris, etc. the waterproof seal will be gone and then they'll well up and look unsightly won't they?!

What water?

Seriously though, i could make these for less than £10 a pair...why worry...just bung on a new set! And anyway, MDF takes days of being saturated before it swells, it's not like chipboard.

Phil,
They only protrude about 1/4 past the original! (I used a 24mm lens so a bit of an optical illusion) And as for too thick, any less and it'd flap like paper!

If it doesn't improve the performance then I'd leave them off. I think it probably will look nicer without them, not that looks matter ...

Sorry Martin, these remind me of the B17 NASA built to recover airmen and astronauts from dinghies in the sea, two bloody great longs prongs sticking out of the front of the plane making it look like a praying mantis.

Too big old friend, to "legs akimbo" for me but I suppose if thats what the locals are like it'll be rubbing off.....

You should see what I've done to my side pods. Justin has the photos.

Anoyher couple of pics as the lens I used for the first one distorts perspective a bit.

piccies much better second time around...looks pretty cool to me. side on they almost look like a pair of crab claws ready to bite away...aggressive, but in a nice way!

If you can do a set for £10 you might want to set up a business.

Cheers, M

Are there any legality/liability issues for road use? They don't look at all pedestrian friendly. (My splitter is rather more subtle and hardly extends beyond the outline of the bodywork in plan view, but even so I suspect it might not comply to the letter of the law.)

Martin, If you hit a bump with them , might the extra rigidity of the MDF cause the clamshell to splinter rather than the splitter?

That's what concerns me - the stock units have some play in them. I'd like to see some kind of solid injected foam splitter that gives more and won't crack when bumped.

The other niggle with the stock piece is the white showing through when the leading edge gets scraped - if they put some black paint/dye into the mix the undercoat would be black so no dabbing required!
