Mrs S needs a new car. She has taken a bit of a shine to the Kia Rio, so today we went to look at some. Our intended budget is around £6k but we are flexible.
Saw a car for sale which more or less fitted the bill at a nearby Kia main dealer, so went for a look.
The screen sticker price was £5800.
Mrs S is currently in a 2005 Kia Sportage . It looks fine, drives ok and has 10months MOT , so I went in thinking that somewhere around £5k plus the old Kia would get Mrs S into the new car.
The salesman said they'd see what they could do and went off to consult, as they do. They returned and offered us £600 px. Fair enough, thought I, that's a reasonable starting position.
They then handed me the printout
below.

Apparently my estimated £5k price to change wasn't £200 away, it was more than £1000 light!
My how we laughed at my foolishness.

Easyguard looks like the dealers way of fleecing you tbh.
Check the warranty too, probably able to get the same for much less elsewhere!

That heading was to cover the £149 admin charge and £20 of fuel.

Admin charge from a main dealer? Blimey.

These so called 'admin' charges are getting out of hand. The dealers already have their profit factored into the sticker price, so they are just adding more profit.

Tell them to keep their paint guard (it will be useless), and shop around for a better warranty.

Forget the paint protection, tell them you want the warranty free. After all it is a Kia which comes with 7 years and then try your best to haggle around the 'admin' fee.

Supposedly garages don’t make money on the cars themselves so if you won’t cheerfully buy the other stuff, and/or buy on finance then they won’t be interested in selling you the car.

Also, appreciate the dealer probably can’t retail it but is the Sportage really only worth £6-800? What’s the WBAC offer on it?

We had pretty much the same at a Toyota dealer in April when we were looking to swap my wife's Jazz for a Yaris.

We finally reached a deal but it was just under two hours of faffing around with the sales guy disappearing to see his manager numerous times. I almost kicked it into touch but the Yaris was in decent condition (unlike the 2 others we had seen) and the Jazz was due MOT the following week.

Still painful though.

Here's my version from a few weeks back:

I walked, muttering to myself abut how anyone could possibly fall for this stuff. What irked me was the dealer's insistance that "most people see value in these additional products" and that I was somehow missing out on something.

Just tell them you don't want them, there is no need to walk.

However including GAP in a quote; I'm pretty sure is against FCA regulations.

Whats the deal with the fuel? How much of you get.

And if you say no, does that mean they drain the tank and make you bring your own jerry can hehe

We went to local VW dealer on the back of a VW advertised PCP deal on Tiguan. The dealer added so much stuff their quote was £100/mth more than advertised!

I asked for a copy and they refused. Made our excuses and left.

Tried CarWow - the same dealer quoted, almost £100/mth less than the VW offer. If they’d offered anything less than the VW offer when we visited we’d have snatched their hand off.

It's an absolute racket and one of the many reasons I'll always buy private (used) or online (new).

Visiting the dealers isn't the experience it should be!

They also would provide an monthly figure but no statement of the APR or the total cost of finance. There was lots of calculator action going on...

I just wasn't happy with the attitude. In a later version they did take everything off, but ramped up the finance rate (moving from VWFS to LLoyds) and threw in the warranty "for free" - ignoring the fact that I was buying a second-hand VW from VW which comes with 12 months warranty anyway...

I got the same model from another dealer in the end, who was happy just to take cold hard cash without any of this nonsense.

And the £25 of petrol was for 1/4 of a tank. This is a Polo. I'm not sure they hold £100 of fuel...

£509 for GAP!!!!

Bloody hell, that’s one hell of a markup. I think that’s THE most expensive quote I’ve seen for a boggo car (no offence!).
