So it seems that 15 different insurance brokers and companies all searched my credit on the same specific day. I hadn't done anything of note that day, like making inquiries about new insurance or making a claim, and yet 15 brokers all performed hard searches of my credit report. Could they know something I don't? A speeding ticket? Somebody making a claim against me? Any help is much appreciated.

Have you tried speaking to any of them to find out? If you didn’t make any quote requests or similar it is possible someone else has using your details. Speak to the brokers concerned to find out why & how they got your details ( online / telephone / in person ).

You will get a bunch of identity checks when you do a price comparison search, sometimes when you do it you agree to some terms and conditions that allow them to search again for you next year for new quotes.

I would suspect they are not hard searches

Should just be a IDV check - step one by insurance co is to check the person is ‘real’ at that address - for these points

1. Insurance quote
2. Insurance purchase / payment using credit ( monthly payments)
3. Insurance claim or investigation following claim .

The IDV is not a credit check and would not affect your credit rating.

I had something similar. Approximately 12 months after I did a car insurance price comparison search online. It appears to be in their T&Cs. From memory, I sent an email instructing them to remove me from their database.

Or to actually take out insurance as happened in my case. The searches were removed after I kicked off at Experian for allowing searches with the incorrect DOB. I ended up with a CIFAS on my credit history for a year.

The first I knew was when I received a letter from 1st Central Insurance asking me to confirm my details and then a policy etc from Churchill. 1st Central were a shower of st when contacted, Churchill were very good.
