If you go through an old GATSO speed camera at night, in an area with street lamps, would you still notice the flash if you weren't directly looking in your rear-view mirror? Is it really that obvious?

No, not if you were keeping to the speed limit.

"go through" implies triggering the speed camera, making your reply mute.

and it was a dual carriageway which I thought was 40, not 30.

Yes, unless you're really unobservant.

What made you think it was 40?

Why do people insist on using words or phrases they don't understand?

Are any of the old gatsos still live. I know they're not around my way.

Because they want to look "cleverer".

I said "mute" instead of "moot" so I clearly understand the phrase......

It's a city ring road and 40 for the section I was travelling. Then it suddenly drops to 30 but the signs aren't amazingly clear.

Just before the speed camera there was a camera + 30 sign, but it was very small and only on the outside lane of the dual carriageway. In other words, there was no sign in the central reservation.

Why didn't you write moot in the first place if you knew of the existence of the word.

I'll confirm this (interestingly it's the only useful reply in the thread). I triggered one a few years ago (Twickenham I think) didn't get anything in the post. At night they are very bright, you'd need to have your eyes closed to miss it.

Yes you would probably notice.

I'm constantly setting off speed camera's whilst at work, and at night it's like somebody flashes you really quickly twice, but then brighter, and even during the day when it's a bit cloudy/misserable outside you can still see it.
